My best advice is much like everybody else's. Take a safety or CCW course. You should find a good one day course for a hundred bucks or less. Then, find a good range that has a wide selection of handguns to rent. Shoot lots of them, pistols as well as revolvers before you ever think of buying one. Shoot lots of calibers too. There is no perfect caliber. Larry and I agree on one thing only as far as I can tell (bet he'd agree with me), we both love .45ACP 1911s. That doesn't mean squat to or for you. You may come away with entirely different opinions. In spite of my love for .45, I just today picked up the gun below, my FOURTH version of the SW Model 29. It's a .44 Magnum out of which I will most likely shoot 44 Special virtually all the time.

Beware big box gun counter salespeople and their advice. They get bonuses to push certain makes. Feel free to PM any questions you have and BIG congrats on taking it slow and smart.

Buying new? Ruger's extensive .357 line are built like tanks and take serious punishment. I'm liking this one a lot, having fondled but not shot one. Yet. 900 dollar MSRP, it'll go for that for a while and then drop a hundred or so. Ruger's new offerings are always butt slow getting into the distributor stream. If buying used I'd look for a Security 6, Speed 6 or Service 6 (round butt, rare and sweet) in a 4 inch bbl. You can shoot the beejeezus out of a Ruger magnum and pass it on to your grandkids and they can do the same thing.

I own a bunch of Smiths in .357, they are jewels, but I wouldn't shoot consistently hot loads through them. Mine are mostly once or twice a year safe queens. Rugers are workhorses. Yeah, they're investment cast. Pssssht.

Meant to add, I know of very few OOB perfect handguns. Every pistol I buy to keep, including several Smith and Wesson Performance center examples, gets an internal "buff and fluff" from my gunsmith.

I have a great love for any good pistol made of steel instead of plastic...the craftsmanship shines through the more you handle them. However, Glocks and S&W M&P have their place.

I only have a few wheelguns right now, but I lust after more than I can afford. I can't say that I care too much for the alloy framed versions, but there are some out there that rank rather high in the reviews.

My best advise mirrors Hatties...find a range that allows you to rent a number of different firearms and keep shooting them until you find one that feels right. You don't want one that feels uncomfortable in your hands. You want one that points true as you raise your arm. Any with an 18 degree grip feels right to me.
