I have been having a discussion with one of my lunch buddies about this.

He is a Vietnam Vet and says the Afganies got what they deserved. I say women and children?

He says the guy probably knew that the particular families were killing his buddies. I said he is making up his "facts" there has been nothing about that out (yet).

He also says we should have dumped Osama Bin Laden's body in pig blood and let the locals have it. He says that will deter the muslims from wanting to kill us since it will deny them going to heavan (or whatever they call it).

I say we should not do what our enemy does just because they do it. We lose if we lose our values. He says that is what they understand and will respect us more if we do.

Seems crazy to me.

Very tragic...the reports I've heard have mentioned the guy has had mental issues. Sounds like someone who shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Reportedly did 3 tours in Iraq and then on to Afg. I heard some mention of traumatic brain injury. Amazing what they will let slide in the military. The previous murderer/corpse burner Steven Green reportedly gave off numerous signs of instability but they kept him supplied with guns and ammo. Until he really went off the rails and got life in prison.

Full time pacifism is lunacy. OTOH, our military culture has gotten a bit weird IMO. Too much glorification of it, too little openness to considering alternatives. Too much of the 'should'a turned it into a parking lot, gawd-dammit' attitude going on.

Your response here is part of that - sneering at the idea that some room for improvement exists.

Both of the murderers I mentioned were poorly served by their country. It is ultimately their responsibility though neither should have been put in that position.

A lot of that is because MOST of American society is letting a smallsegment of society bear the weight of serving. Upper and upper middle class young are seldom represented in the service. Read the book AWOL.

uh, if you are really ex military, then you should be concerned by the incompetent folks that are allowed to become - and remain - soldiers.

War is cruel. When incident like this happens, everybody lose. I feel sorry for the Afghans as well as the soldier. It is no different from someone going Postal. The bigger issue is how do we patch it all up?

This is the end result of going into a war without a precise EXIT strategy. The US is mired in 2 wars. Iraq is better but the end result is not what we expected. Don't you notice that GWB has not said a word about anything. Do I need to say more?
