New guy with old question (is this car ok?)

I've got my eye on an 87 300TD with 158k on the clock. Everything works except the telescoping wheel, a finicky gas gauge, the cruise control, and the power antenna. The A/C blows cold, it starts and shifts nice, the interior and exterior are relatively mint given the age. Guy is asking $6300. That seems a little high but given the condition of the car, not outrageous. One item of concern is the Lovecrap conversion done on it. It's supposedly the newer system but I have not found anything praising these systems regardless of version. Is there a good veggie conversion in existence or do they all suck? What should I suspect $ wise to remove all of it if need be?

Thanks in advance.

Seth

Run away.

Move this to Diesel Discussion.

$6300 is too high for just about anything of that vintage except for a rare exotic...

...or proof that it was once owned by someone famous (or infamous)...

I'd never buy a veggie-oil car; too many unknowns.

No. It is grey/grey. What would a fair price be for this then? $5500?

Sorry about the wrong section.

hmm. I recall a movie posted here they had a wagon here they were converting... I'd run. there's better wagons out there without many unknowns attatched to it. 5,500 is too high of a gamble for me with that type of work done on it

Single tank conversion is probably the most risky, and I've heard little to recommend Lovecraft myself (and a whole lot of criticism).

If you're really interested, pull a glow plug and see how much carbon buildup there is.

Maybe $1,000. Make that $999 so you can get into the cheap wagon club

I found a mechanic locally who is familiar with the system (doesn't like it either) and providing they haven't hacked up the wiring he said he could remove it for about $100. he also suggested running Diesel Fuel Supplement link

I spoke to our diesel mechanic and he said he could take all the Lovecraft crap off it and flush the system for about $100. It ran well and was quite responsive and peppy so I'm not too worried about it being a lemon. I think I'm going to take the plunge. See you on the other side.

Its probably OK, I'd have the injectors tested anyway. Worst case you need an IP.
