Jindal has ben a mixed bag as I guess all politicians must be. He came in promising systemic reforms and has implemented some but refrained from tampering with executive power amassed by Huey Long and wielded by every governor since. Who (since George Washington) has deliberately chosen to devolve executive power? I can't think of anybody.

Jindal has challenged the entrenched power of several strong unions (good) but has not challenged the power of big business (bad). He has cut gov regulation of things he doesn't like (environmental regs and some of the many paid state boards) but has not desolved the power of boards and licensing agencies for some truly stupid things. Like florists, for example, which have a written test certification process. Florists? Give me a break -- what happens if a florist makes a bad arrangement?

I truly, truly hate to say this but this state needs a resurgent Democrat Party to balance the Repos. The Repos are becoming the agents of resistance to change that the Democrats once were.

I look forward to the Democrats changing from the party of minority indulgence in NOLA and Shreveport to becoming agents of change over-promised by the Repos and under-delivered by the elected officials.

Unfortunately, the state Democrats have embraced the national party's agenda, which doesn't fit anybody in this state. So voters who, in general, are socially conservative (including a large proportion of african-americans) are appalled by the national party's agenda. So even though Democrats remain the majority party of registered voters (yes, I'm a Democrat) few vote for Democrat Party candidates as they feel compelled to embrace the national party's agenda.

Mary Landrieu (senator, Democrat) will probably lose her next election because of national politics. Too bad, she was a senator of the admirable type when she was elected -- unquestioned personal integrity, intelligent, fiscally conservative (she almost single-handedly put the state treasury on an audited, investment-oriented trajectory for the first time). But over time she has become a national player in the senate and has compromised her relationship with the voters in the process. Goodbye Mary.

I suspect David Vitter will lose, too. The Democrats could easily have defeated him in the last election had they nominated a candidate of Mary's stature before she changed.

In Louisiana both parties are stuck with their own lamentable 'ol boy' system. In which party loyalty and seniority are more important than any other qualities. As a consequence, the incumbent usually faces some faceless party stalwart rather than a candidate who offers an inspired vision.

Anyway, that's how I see it.

I am watching NM Gov. Susana Martinez' speech on MSNBC as I write this. I didn't watch last night so can't comment.

I started the thread just to demonstrate ( yet again) the subtlety of media bias. MSNBC did not mis-report--they just managed to plan their time so as to NOT report what was happening, and to reinforce the white image they wanted to report.
Essential devil's advocate question - did Fox do the same or feature them fully? I don't know these names (as I'm not a politico by nature, my media studies surround other areas). That will give a yardstick to measure from at least, according to their draw.

As much as I tire of the media bias threads you start I can't debate that they aren't important issues to discuss. I'm glad people pick up on this. I personally waver from side to side depending on topic.

Here is a pretty good rant about any and all perceived slights to the RNC during Tuesday nights broadcasts from the different networks.

This guy really did his homework.

The person you attempt to shine on is Artur Davis.

TAMPA, Fla. – One of the president's early supporters, former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis, emerged on the prime-time stage at the Republican convention – giving voice to those disillusioned by the promise of the Obama White House.
Almost every convention has one, a party-switcher who becomes a star in their new political home. Davis left the Democratic Party after a failed run for Alabama governor in 2010. Next week, the Democrats will put former Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida on stage, as a Republican now supporting Obama.
But the presence of Davis, an African American who seconded Obama’s nomination four years ago at the Democratic convention in Denver, offered a particularly poignant message.
“Do you know why so many of us believed? We led with our hearts and our dreams that we could be more inclusive than America had ever been, and no candidate had ever spoken so beautifully," said Davis, the Harvard-educated lawyer who has been mulling a run for office as a Republican from his new home in Virginia.
"Let's put the poetry aside, let's suspend the hype, let's come down to earth and start creating jobs," he said to cheers.

Nothing denigrating about it, it was an honest question from my cell phone (no good search). I don't know of too many other super-prominent repubs who are minorities or who would appear as such. From the article you linked, sounds like Davis is somewhat low-key.

Well written if not always well conceived. The abuse of PBS, Mark Shields, et.al. for saying the party of R is more and more a white party is perhaps an example of that. Notwithstanding the undeniable fact that some non-white people proudly place (R) behind their name, it is beyond dispute that the Republicans need 70+% of the white vote to prevail, and power brokers (R) make no secret of this fact.
