Bowden cable equivalent in Ford E4OD?

Is there an equivalent of a Bowden cable on a Ford E4OD ('93 E150 5.8)? I'm guessing it's fully electronic. Pretty much have to floor it to get it to downshift. It doesn't downshift when running on cruise control. Set the cruise at 75, hit a hill (say, the Sierras), it drops to 65, still no downshift, disengage OD to get back to cruise speed. Or floor the pedal to get it to downshift then release to get back on cruise. Otherwise the tranny feels fine. Thoughts?

What's are ATF recommendations for the E4OD? Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission .: Articles says 18-19 quarts. 5 gallons, really??? Is the d@mn case full of fluid?

It appears a '93 should have a torque converter drain. How much fluid is left after draining the pan and torque converter? Enough to mess with a flush?

Thanks,
Sixto

Check the TV cable to see if it's still connected to the throttle body. They were held in with cheap plastic clips. If it's not connected, you've just toasted your OD, and the rest will die out soon.

The cable should be on the passenger side by the throttle linkage, and connects to the linkage from the bottom.

I'm assuming that the fluid smells burnt...if so, a flush and fill MIGHT getyou a few more months, but doubtful.

The capacity should be between 13.5-14 quarts, if the TC is drained.

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums for great help with these trucks. I have two of them now, and have had 3 F series prior to these two. Never had an automatic, due to the fact that I'm one of those that thinks trucks should never be made with an auto tranny.

Wow! Sounds like it'd have bent rods if it had connecting rods

no throttle cable on an E4OD. the e stands for electronic. is it a gasoline engine? the engine computer controls the throttle pressure and shift timing. I wonder if the computer doesnt realise the load on the engine so it wont force a down shift. might just have a really dirty MAF sensor.

E4OD/4R100 is fully electronic. Yes, it (and its successor, the 5R100 aka Torqshift) take quite a bit of fluid; about 15 quarts or so. If it's not downshifting it's not being commanded to do so by the PCM as long as it has all four gears and shifts normally otherwise. You'll need to make sure the drivability aspects are OK first. There might not be a drain plug on the torque converter, especially if it has been replaced at some point. Fluid was Mercon, Ford now specifies Mercon V for that transmission.

Sorry...I got it confused with the AOD transmission. I've been dealing with getting a few replacements lined up for friends of mine these last couple of days. At least I didn't make the mistake of confusing it for an M5OD, one of the other transmissions I'm on the hunt for.

MAF sensor? Air goes from snorkel to air filter to TB. I'm guessing there's a MAP sensor. I had the thing apart and saw no MAF sensor.

I'm often surprised at the stuff forum members are working on or looking for...... We do seem to be an eclectic bunch.

Have a look at the air filter housing it's probably inside. They usually have four or five wires going to them. I dont know what style housing is in that van but you probably have to take out and apart to find the MAF and just clean it with brake clean

The only things with wires upstream of the manifold are the TPS and IAV. As I described, there's the snorkel, air cleaner box (lots of hoses, no wires, only the air filter and a crankcase vent mesh thing inside), 2 separate tubes snaking to the twin bore throttle body. ********.com doesn't list a MAF for this car/van/truck. I'm not surprised because our '97 Caravan 3.3 doesn't have a MAF either.

That we are.

I've been designated the scrounge for my small group of friends. Finding transmissions around here that aren't trashed is difficult. Luckily, I have a number of friends that live in Ohio, where the land is much flatter, and transmissions last much longer.

I didnt know what year they started using a MAF. It does have a MAP sensor. Gonna need a scan tool to figure out what is going on.
