2002 DODGE RAM VAN User Comment / Complaint

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 dodge 1500 ram van. during a routine tune up on the vehicle the contact was lying on floor with his back facing the driver's seat when the power seat button was accidentally engaged. the contact was pined between the seat and the pedal well. the contact was unable to reach the switch to pull the seat back. someone was unsuccessful at attempting to assist him due to the seat being pushed forward. the fire department's only option was to use the jaws of life to cut the driver seat out of the vehicle. the contact stated that the front seat location of the switch was the cause of the failure. the current and failure mileage were 15,385. the consumer has provided a copy of incident report from waterford township fire department. update 05/10/07

Hey BC.

Have you considered welding a socket ONTO the plug/stuff down in the hole? I would attempt to weld it on the inside of the socket......

There isn't any way to weld to the puddle of slag/rust/heat shield accumulation. That must be heated and picked out or vaporized out with oxygen.

Again, for the 10th time........I'm not concerned with removal of the plug at this moment. The plug will come out fine.............in due time.

I guess I missed the previous 9 times. I get it now; the plugs come out easy....it's just the slag/rust/heat shield that are in the way.

Have you ever seen a solder sucker? Would one of these be helpful?

Brian,
My hat is off to you. You, sir, have the patience and intestinal fortitude of Biblical proportions.
I have nothing to suggest---you far exceeded my level of contribution at about 10 hours into the project. The ONLY thing that would keep me going on such a stupid ( from the factory) issue would be my pride.
And I thought the allen-headed motor mount screws on my 300SD were trouble! I need to go an apologize to the 300SD for things I said during that process.

If tribulation builds character--you have it in spades.

Thanks Michael. I really don't have the patience and fortitude. When I get frustrated with it, I take a break for a few days and think about the options.

Unfortunately, I'm kind of forced to find a solution. If I fail, I have to remove the head. That's the worst possible outcome. It's very, very difficult in a van.

I've decided to take #1 to the dealer and see if they'll take $100. to do it. Maybe they have some trick that I'm not aware of.

When they started raising the combustion chamber temps to burn off all the pollutants is when these kinds of things started.

That makes it yet another example of unintended consequences of federal law-making. They cannot foresee all the consequences, or don't care, or do see them and desire them--in any event its one reason to oppose any new sweeping laws--especially ones that are rushed to pass. Time is needed to see what what evil might lurk inside those high-sounding statutes.

Did Federal law dictate the specific design of those heat shields? Or did Chrysler?

I'd have to say Chrysler. They could've designed some sort of bolt-on sheild - but the extra minute on the assembly-line would've been more expensive. They could've made the sheild from stainless - but that would've been more expensive. They went to the trouble of adding those sheilds - as cheaply as possible!

Happy Motoring, Mark

I didn't read the whole thread but Lye (NaOH) will eat aluminum very quickly.

If you have iron heads you could mix some powdered drain cleaner with water into a thin paste and use this to disintegrate the remainder of the aluminum heat shield. Just be sure to wear gloves and a face shield-chemical burns are no fun. Cleanup is as easy as rinsing with coca cola.

Nevermind, I went back and read. Specialty shop seems like the best bet.

On a side note, you walk with a limp don't you?
