My Mrs. had the habit. My angle with her was not to smoke in front of the kids so they wouldn't do it. She tried and tried and what finally worked for her was going to lighter and lighter cigarettes so the nicotine part of the habit was less and less, then she cut down until the nicotine part of the addiction was less and finally quit after about ten years of trying. For another ten years she would bum whenever she was drinking but afik she no longer ever does that.

I used to smoke cigars but never really had the nicotine hook.

If you really want to quit, move to NY. The $10+/pack will break that habit very quickly.

I trust you all know Mark Twain's quote about quitting smoking: "It's easy to do, I've done it hundreds of times".

And the worst part of it all is that they're not even good cigars...

Lettuce-leaf cigs can get rid of the nicotine if you want to ease out of it.

I don't smoke (other than the occasional cigar with the Mrs.), but I've never been able to give up caffeine so I can somewhat relate. Good luck, 'Man!

I have a friend who did this, from the outside perspective of watching him, my impression was that an electronic cigarette really only transfers your nicotine dependence to another object. You end up not doing anything to really attack the addiction, you just move to another way to fuel it.

Ironically, because the electronic cigarette was supposedly healthier, he smoked it more and more, so what he did was increase his dependence on nicotine while he was trying to quit the habit.

I feel like its better to attempt a cold turkey break. It was way harder for my friend in the end to kick the habit than if he had tried cold turkey without the move to electronic.

my 2 cents

I gave them up 42 Yes. ago by eating Black licorice. Licorice and nicotine taste horrible.

Nicotine clears out of your system pretty quickly. The physical cravings subside in as little as one week, two at the most.
OTOH, the emotional / mental addiction to the habit last a lot longer.
I quit the day I went to the cardiac cath lab in a helicopter. The week I spent in the hospital was not that difficult thanks to chantix. My first week at home was not so bad, as I never smoked in the house or in front of my wife.

The worst was when I was out on my own, driving, at work, leaving the convenience store, walking out the door at the office, etc. All the trigger spots where I used to light up in the past. My hands needed something to do.
That was the hardest fOr me

It is no secret to any of us that cigarette smoking is not compatible with a long and healthy life.

If being around on God's great earth for as long as possible is important to you, you need to quit now.

Clk. I quit cigarettes at a very young age, so it was not as difficult as it is for older people, but here's how I did it:

I was at the pool every day and swam as much as I could. The exercise blew the stuff out of my lungs in short order. If you are in good enough health for vigorous exercise, it will help you to get past your cravings much quicker.

Hope this helps and best of luck with it!

The funny thing is that I didn't start smoking until about 7 years ago. Smoking seems to calm me down, which I like. I just smoke way too many a day, sometimes 2 packs a day.
