I just heard on spanish language TV the leader has died.

I'm having trouble mustering a great deal of sympathy, at least beyond the great sympathy I feel for those he has suppressed by whatever means he chose.

Cancer is a horrible way to die, though, and no one really deserves that. I'm glad he's gone, and I'm glad his suffering is over.

Chavez did break the death-grip the oligarchy has had on Venezuela since they abandoned Simon Bolivar after independence. Hopefully Colombia will do the same. And Mexico, of course.

Aside from being anti-American and grandstanding massively, was he really any worse than any other Latin American tinpot dictator? If anything, his regime seemed pretty mild as compared to the horrors that went down in Guatemala or Argentina in the 80s.

Colorful character. I liked the UN speech he gave a few years back where he followed Bush to the podium and complained of the sulfer smell.

I think that the first people who should read this book are our brothers and sisters in the United States, because their threat is right in their own house. The devil is right at home. The devil, the devil himself, is right in the house.

Thug? You mean like the people who kidnap people from foreign countries, and then hold them in solitary, 10+ years without trial? That kind of thug?

Most people's objections to the man seem to boil down to the fact that: "he didn't like America. He f'ed over American oil interests." Yeah, he was a corrupt buffoon and certifiably insane towards the end, but not sure if that makes him outright evil, especially on the scale of Latin American leaders.

And then amassing a 2 Billion fortune on the backs of the same people.
