Might be a good idea to take it to a proper mechanic for a real diagnostic.

But the German Walbro is only like $60 but you need to stick it into the plastic housing that always adds $300 to the price

I would say if banging on tank makes it start, it is fuel pump and only fuel pump unless the connection to the pump itself is wonky. But make sure the banging is relevant, and not something that you just happened to do

I checked the relay and heard it clicking.

as for the mechanic, he had a code reader.

I didst not see where thou hast said that ye replaced thine fuel pump, for that I are sorry. Something is amiss, perhaps you got a crap pump from the get go, some just come bad....

This car is broke again. I banged on the tank. and it worked Saturday. I have to get a full body MRI in the morning and I need to have this thing running. I'm beginning to miss my clk 320.

YEP!!!! I called him today and told him that I had to have the car running because I have to get to the hospital for a MRI. He showed up and said that he had got a new fuel pump from his auto parts place. I was suspicious, so I watched him replace the pump when he took out the supposedly NEW pump, the strainer sock was black, not white and the plastic on the top of the pump was yellowed. He had never changed the pump. He is no longer my mechanic.

It was, I think he thought that I didn't know anything about cars. I could have made the repair myself but didn't want to have to climb under the car and get all dirty. I had a big customer at a dealership that needed a mechanic. I was going to recommend him to them. There's no telling how much business he WON'T get now. As I said before, it's his loss.
