They are territorial and instinctively protective of every living thing within their territory, livestock, poultry, pets and humans included. They decide when something is a threat.
They make lousy pets because they are nearly impossible to train. If you come onto my property without being introduced to them first, it can get ugly real fast. Once they know who you are, they ignore you. They protect the goats and sheep mainly, being confined with them all the time. When I let the herds go out onto our far pasture along the creek, the dogs go with them. At kidding and lambing time they become very active, observing and sometimes helping. I have had several occasions where a ewe or doe dropped an unexpected baby on a cold night, and didn't know what to do with it. The dogs have saved several babies over the years, licking them dry and curling up around them to keep them warm till morning.
The hapless coyote who strays onto the place is done for. They take them apart with great precision. The three males will surround the 'yote and hold him and at just the right moment the female barrels in and guts the beast. Then all hell breaks loose. There is nothing recognizable left.
Don't even think about considering a livestock guardian dog as a pet. Bad idea.
ETA big scale sheep and cattle ranchers are starting to realize that LGDs are much better than traps, hunters or poisons for protecting their herds in the wild. Far less predation. I've gotten 1500 apiece for puppies in the past.

I've been thinking about getting a couple Anatolians for about a year now to use them as body guards for the Salukis. I talked to a woman at a dog show here in Cal., she is from Arizona. She mentioned that she or a friend placed a couple dog with someone that wanted one to be a body guard for their Salukis (small world). I'm hoping to have a couple Saluki pups soon and would like to get the Anatolians at that time. Un-trainable!? Sounds like a Saluki.

I guess Anatolians would guard other dogs. On my place they guard people, cats, poultry, horses, cattle, sheep and goats. But I can't stress this enough: don't harbor even the most remote notion that they are somehow trainable, or could eventually be made into pets. Consider your property carefully. Lacking a proper fence, they will create their own boundaries, which might be on someone else's land. They bark at everything they deem a threat to whatever they consider their herd. Trying to shut them up is a fool's errand. If a child or other dog they have not been carefully introduced to comes on your property they will kill and dismember it and there won't be any commands that will stop them. I have signs at every entrance to my property: "Warning: Working Livestock Guardian Dogs on Premises, Do Not Enter, Please Blow Your Horn".

Yeah? Same attitudes during the middle-ages, when the religious authorities riled up the peasents with fears of witches and demons to kill all the cats. Their reward - an explosion of the rat population and the Black Plague!
According to my friend, who lives in nearby Arlington County, except for the Plague, the same thing happened there some years back when local yuppies got the authorities to round-up most of the stray cat population. Then they started complaining about the rodents!

Over the years, I've taken in several cats - some that were born right here in my side-yard. Treat them right and they'll be as affectionate a pet as you could want!
Besides, have you trained your dog to use the litter-box lately?
At least I don't hate dogs.

Happy Motoring, Mark

This thread makes me think that we've got both kinds of people here - cat people and dog people

I might start a music thread to talk about both kinds of music - country and western

Well the neighbours at the cottage are taking a healthy interest in the dog we got last year. He is large enough to be scary but gentle as a lamb. Pretty smart as well.

Even when another dog attacked him he just pushed him away. A very strong push that sent the other dog flying. Never saw or heard of that being done before. He just spun around and hip tossed the other dog at the last second. The timing was impressive and the execution done very fast.

Normally attacking dogs do not respect size and power. Still the other dog did not come back for more. Initially I thought our dog would have fought back using teeth .That could have been bad to fatal for the other dog I believe.

I was just speculating again this morning with the wife about whatever breeds he is a mix of. At first we thought burnese mountain dog and perhaps collie.

He is developing into a great sociable dog. That is much more important than the breeds anyways. My own guess now is there may be more than two breeds in his linage. He is heavy, smart, fast, and very powerful. I thought larger dogs where slow? His legs and paws are very thick and about the size of a smaller human wrist.

If he showed any aggressive tendancies at all we could not keep him. Just too heavy strong and powerful to risk. I will soon weigh him again. He was only about 40-45 pounds when we acquired him with absolutly no history. Then he grew and put on size and weight.

Another strange thing to us at least is he vocalizes a lot whenever he wants something. Kind of a low growl to a tiny bark.

Obviously you need to stop his watching of Chuck Norris videos!

He does not watch television at all even when there is a barking dog on it. On the other hand our much older dog does on occasion. Some of his traits are breed specific or a homogenization of them. We just do not know the breeds.

Since his nose is usually warm and he is healthy as a horse. I figure this increases or amplifies his scent detection. He may be good at tracking but I have not tested him .

When he approaches any child under about age seven. He goes to about five feet away and sits. He wastes no time in getting there either. The child then must approach him.

So I told the kids in the neighborhood not to let him frighten them. If a child is older than about seven he goes right up to them for a pet. Still does the routine of stopping about five feet away first.

Because of the high speed approach and his size as he never just walks up to someone. I depend on the local kids at the cottage to assure any other kids that he is very, very friendly.

Even at my age if I did not know that dog and it was approaching at high speed I would have concerns. You can just see the power. The kids and people that know him really like him still.

Many come to the cottage just to see him often. Last week some of the local kids even had him up on the trampoline with them out back. The dog even seemed to be enjoying it. The kids where.

Some dogs like to work I found out. So last year I took a thirty pound propane tank and put it on a wagon. Put a body harness on the dog and was going to introduce him to pulling the wagon.

Was not required. He took to it instantly. So round and around the quarter mile loop we went. He had to know he was pulling the load but seemed totally indifferent to it from the first step with it. If I built a proper cart my guess is he would happily haul the local kids around.

I'm more of a dog person, but where we live, there are no sidewalks to walk a dog, and when I had one growing up, it was with so much land that we never needed to clean up after the dog.
We're not moving any time soon, so no dog.
I'm fine not having any pets, but the wife and kids seem to keep wanting to have something in the house.
We've had.. rabbit, iguana, cat, guinea pig, hamster, fish, and now chinchillas.
We almost made it one year without a non-human in the house.
I don't dislike them, I just have no need or attachment.

I am surprised how man People have both Cats and Dogs.

When I was a Kid I had 2 Dogs. The first died after about 1 year and got another from the same Mother a year or so later and it lived for about 17 Years.
I think a Dog are good companion for a Boy growing Up. I can't see a Boy sharing his adventures with His Cat.

As an Adult My first exposure to Cats was when I got out of the Army and when Home and My Mom had 2 Cats. Soon after I got back She moved out of state and Left Me with the House to take care of and Pay for. She also left the Cats.
So I took care of the Cats and got very fond of the one.
A Year later My Mom had My Grandmother Move in with me and another Year later Mom was back. I was going to Trade School and with in another 2 Years Mom got 2 more Cats.

When I got My own House I was not interested in owning any Pets.
In 30 years I had 4 litters of Cats Born on My Property but always left them alone and they dispersed; moving out of My Yard.
I year 31 I found a Cat living in My Truck. Apparently this Cat was abandon by someone. In short it was a very nice mannered Cat and I have had it now for over 6 Years.
It used to be about a half outside and half inside Cat. Now that it is older it stays inside most of the time and sleeps.
I was happy with the one Cat.

About one year and 4 Months ago a litter of Cats was born under My House. But, the 4 Kittens were so cute My Wife would not stop feeding them. So, once we started feeding them We were sort of stuck with them.
Of course I ended up being the one that does %95 of the care for the herd of Cats.

Last Sunday Night the most affectionate of the litter of Cats that I liked was Killed by a Car. So I have the 3 outside Cats from the Litter and the Old Cat inside.

As a older Person Myself I like how Cats look how the feel when I handle them. I also like that the do not need a lot of attention like Dogs do. If I had 4 Dogs I think I would be worn out.

I named the Cats not thinking I would be keeping them. The only Male Cat I named Chubby because when He was a Kitten He was Chubby; but now not.

Dogs when younger at least seem to be always semi alert. Even when sleeping. It is in their nature to guard and investigate and warn of something unusual around I think.

They really get pissed off if someone gets to the front door before they detect them. Seldom happens. What amazes me is no matter how long we are away in any given day or even overnight. One or the others face is always almost visable in a window as we pull into the yard.

They must go into a higher constant alert status after we leave for this to occur. For all I know they may take shifts. They also are very much creatures of consistancy and habit.
