Naturally. No worries for vehicles over 25 years old.

How much do you think you can get for those 25 year old diesel G's here in the states? Would importing them to Holland where they can be driven tax free not be more lucrative and easier?

I can get them for enough to justify the entire shipping hassle and make some profit. The question is GOING through the hassle. Diesel Gelandewagens can be had for roughly the same price all over the European Union, and pay no sales tax if they are being exported.

Federal approval is one thing. State emission tests are another. I don't think 25 yr old imported vehicles in CO are exempt from the standard emission test requirements. For diesels it would just be an opacity test but the test for gasoline models is more complex.

In CT, vehicles over 25 years are (currently) exempt from testing. YMMV.

Exemptions

The following vehicles are exempt from Connecticut's emissions testing requirements:
  • Vehicles newer than four years old
  • Vehicles older than 25 years old
  • Vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds
  • Farm vehicles
  • Motorcycles

That was the beauty of owning a diesel in CT. No inspection, no emissions. The only thing that they really cared about was the VIN. I still had to take my old diesel into a state garage just because they needed to make sure it wasn't stolen. Annoying!

I'm curious as to how the numbers play out on this. My gut tells me that the G's would have to be purchased at a really low price in Europe in order to make enough profit--maybe buying them 50 at a time or something from an army auction or something like that.

Not that I want to pay yet another fee to the state of CT, but it amazes me that we don't have periodic safety inspections. Unless you get ticketed for a vehicle safety-related infraction (which requires an inspection to prove that the repair has been made), you could ostensibly continue to drive a completely unsafe vehicle for years and years. I had a '90 Ford F350 Crew Cab that was previously titled in New Jersey and at the time I was required to go through inspection since it wasn't previously registered in CT. I failed inspection due to fender arch rust-through in the bed and the high beam indicator light did not work. If it was previously registered in CT it could have had holes in the frame, crumbling body mounts, leaky brakes and worn steering gear and they'd have issued a plate.

In Maine, there are some visible rot-buckets on the road but at least there's some comfort in knowing that at least the frame, body mounts, brakes and steering have been inspected at some point in the last 365 days.
