I'm sure you are correct, but it doesn't make me forget history. Just because I'm a conservative, that doesn't make me turn a blind eye toward ANY of those snakes in Washington, past or present, regardless of party. |

I don't think the figure is anything like what you say. The problem, as I see it, is that the biggest a**h***s seem to find their way into leadership positions. I'm not sure why that happens. |

Chair positions, particularly in the Senate, are seniority positions. In the House, committee positions are part of award assignments based on party support, including fundraising performance.

Interesting - once again, the people on this board who usually espouse 'liberal' values think that we are stuck with right wing leadership
and the people that constantly espouse right wing values think that we have left wing leadership... deja vu all over again ? -John

You know Jim, my reactions and feelings toward your posts over the years have been quite interesting. It has been sort of a closed loop mode with constant tuning to compensate for negative feedback and then tuning for positive feedback.
Every time I start gaining respect for you and your posts and good feelings about how you deal with me, you reach out and just bltch slap me right across the face. It is a very strange constant cycle. |

I find it remarkable that any mention of Nixon elicits the predictable and immediate hatred of the left side of the isle. At the same time, he gets no credit from the left for his very leftist ( for the times) policies.
You guys really know how to hate and carry a grudge.

Yeah, you would think that the lefties would have a monument recognizing him for his jettisoning of the Gold Standard, not to even mention his other leftist tendencies. |

It does not change the fact that he is the only president ever to resign in the face of bipartisan determination to remove him and (I may over reach on this one) charge him with criminal charges. I guess my biggest bone with him is the fact that he lied about having a plan to get us out of Vietnam and then for the next five years escalated the war bringing many many more deaths to our people and the (largely) innocent people of Vietnam. I am not saying all Vietnamese were innocent but I suspect a large majority of the deaths were of innocent people.

Two recessions during the time Nixon was POTUS. 12-69 to 11-70 -and- 11-73 to 3-75 Nixon was gone as POTUS as of 8-74 but the effects of his presidency lingered for a long time. The term “stagflation” was a child of his economic policies. A Review Of Past Recessions The number of Americans killed during Vietnam was an all star performance. Americans killed at 58,209 and wounded at 153,303. Not all died under Mr “Peace with Honor”, but a lot did. United States military casualties of war - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The secret bombing of Cambodia ran from March 1969 until August 1973. Nixon set up an elaborate system of deception to hide the bombing campaign from the public, the media, and Congress.9 Revealing what can only be described as a cannibalistic mindset, the first raids were called “Breakfast,” followed by “Dinner,” “Snacks,” and “Dessert,” while the entire operation was known as “Menu.” During the first fourteen months of the campaign, the U.S. conducted more than 3,630 B-52 raids dropping over 110,000 tons of bombs on Cambodia. When the bombing ended, the U.S. had dropped a total of 257,465 tons of explosives on Cambodia.10 “The effect on the war in Vietnam was nil;” according to historian Marilyn Young, “the effect on Cambodia was devastating.”11 Cambodia had begun its descent into hell that would culminate with the triumph of the genocidal Khmer Rouge in 1975. Torture was used systematically by U.S. forces. Military intelligence officer K. Barton Osborne described the use of torture he witnessed in Vietnam: The use of the insertion of the 6-inch dowel into the canal of one of my detainees ears, and the tapping through the brain until dead. The starvation to death (in a cage) of a Vietnamese woman who was suspected of being part of the local political education cadre in one of the local villages.… Meanwhile, back at home… …on May 4, exhausted National Guardsmen, who had spent the previous days attempting to break a wildcat Teamsters strike, fired on and killed four students at Kent State University in Ohio, wounding nine others. The country was stunned, and student strikes and protests spread to more than 1,300 colleges and universities. Ten days later, two Black students were killed and twelve wounded by police at Jackson State College in Mississippi. Many of the leading newspapers thought that the country was coming apart. A nervous Nixon appeared at a press conference on May 8 and announced that the U.S. would be out of a Cambodia by June 30. Just a few highlights. Why would anyone carry a grudge towards this guy? Nixon was a tribute to GOP ideology. |
