My uncle is the head of computer security at the Brookhaven National Labs (what he describes as a stressful job because employees there are smart but care little about computer security) and he has all of his sensitive files on Linux, just like most of the labs (as Linux is cheap compared to other operating systems and the labs try to budget as much money possible to research rather than things like operating systems).
Like or dislike OneDrive, the implementation in Win 8.1 is boneheaded. It would seem like they'd want a user account to be married to a given OneDrive account for life, which is silly.

BTW, Office for iPad can also talk to a corporate Sharepoint site, and in future, it may be able to talk to other cloud providers (as well as hopefully doing straight WebDAV Secure). There is other office software for iPad that's much more agnostic about what it can talk to as well. IMHO, MS locking users to only their sharing platforms is pretty inexcusable, since things like Dropbox, WebDAV, or even secure FTP are in common usage.

I won't even use Office for iPad, I'm just using Office online. Office for iPad is $10 a month, it requires the bundle plan for the Office suite which is up to 5 computers and up to 5 tablets. Not a terrible price if a family or small business had 5 computers and 5 tablets in used regularly but otherwise its quite expensive. Office online is free and seems to work pretty well compared to other word processors I have used on my iPad.

I am starting to use my dad's new laptop that was a refurb unit from Lenovo and shipped with 8.0. I can sorta see now what people are complaining about with it not being as smooth as one might want but I isolated it to being the trackpad. Whatever Lenovo put in this laptop is terrible, worse than the trackpad in his old XP laptop from 2003, but really not much different than what is in his 4 or so year old Windows 7 laptop. Hooked up a USB mouse and everything felt fine.
Now what is really annoying with any windows machine is updating it out of the box. This has been through 4 or 5 sets of updates by now (taken 6 hours too) and still hasn't been updated to 8.1. Not quite as bad as updating an XP machine all the way to SP3 (especially over dial-up, good lord) but still quite annoying.

I wasn't completely happy with Win7 after having used XP for several years. XP was quite effective.

Meanwhile, OpenOffice on an Android tablet is FRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEE! And doesn't require you to voluntarily rape your own privacy by uploading everything to the Great Mothership in Redmond.

It also works offline, which is the whole point of things like Office for iPad and Openoffice vs the online offerings.

I wish I had an Android tablet instead, much better apps on Android overall.

I was actually looking into getting a tablet running full Windows 8. The 1st gen Surface Pro with an i5 is right around $400 now while HP's Atom (eww) powered one can be had for around $200. If I wanted Surface RT (eww again) they can be had for around $180 now.

Escape From XP: The Video Game

This is a glorious 8-bit self-satire that features an evil Clippy lording over a battlefield of ancient PCs, Internet Explorer 6 logos, and other digital relics from an age before the MS Office ribbon when Justin Timberlake was still just a member of 'N Sync and Friendster was king.

The one gotcha with the 1st gen Pro is that Bluetooth devices and built-in WiFi seem to interfere with each other something fierce. And (IIRC) the stylus blocks the external screen point. Decent devices with some boneheaded design features.

Only thing that RT tablets are good for are attaching them to a pie and throwing them at Steve Ballmer's obese mug.

Heads should roll over that failing. What a complete waste of tax dollars.
