Racism is a learned trait. Passed on. It's what one does with the knowledge that makes the difference.

Byrd and most of his generation are long dead and a few of them, best forgotten. It is also good to remember that civil rights in the south were supported by many white southerners. Some paid with loss of their friends, loss of position, loss of fortune and a few, loss of life. However, it almost goes without question had outsiders not forced change we would have only come a few baby steps from where we were.

Fast forward to today and we have more black Americans in local, state and federal office than we have ever had in history and most of them are in the South. Mixed racial couples are not quite normal in the South, but it's close and a far, far distance from where we were a scant generation ago.

I figure it will take the disappearance for my generation to bring this awful chapter of American history to its long-overdue close, though despite that, I hope to live to see it.

Racism and tribalism aren't quite the same thing. Tribalism would find people of the same race but of a different tribe a problem. Races aren't tribes without a lot of cultural effort expended to make a race into a tribe.

There's only occasional racist behavior practiced. I doubt that a true racist can exist. It's more descriptive of bigotry, or perhaps prejudice practiced at times.

I'd like to agree with you but experience moderates against. I could probably list 15-30 people with whom I graduated from high school who are (and have always been) racists. Mine was a AA school before integration. I would not suppose that my high school was especially virulent and my experience of having lived in several southern states and many communities in those states, affirms that belief. I do not have objective, independent data.

I imagine that translates to at least 10% of my cohort, perhaps more.

Sometimes it is a bonus of punishment given to those that are indeed dug-in with their felonious/heinous behavior. I am considering the addition of the hate crime language/punishment when logging a case against certain individuals in pursuit of justice in the near term. It certainly has it's place in the courts, IMO.

And no one has said that all Rs are racist. What I have said a few times, in response to the fact that the Democratic party was early on a slave holding party, and the predilection of some conservatives to carry on as though that is the definitive history of democrats from top to bottom is that a lot of the hard core D racists went R after Johnson did his 'colored loving' routine in the 60s. Byrd was not one of them. The allegation that either party has a greater toehold on racist tendencies is sort of a fool's argument IMO.
