Byrd attempted some sort of repentance from his earlier days IMHO, something that I can't say for Strom Thurmond. After his death it became clear that while Thurmond came down 4 square on keeping blacks 'out of our churches, our schools, and our swimming pools' he was OK with having at least one of them in his bed.

I refer to race in that way as I suspect that primitive people encountering another group, a tribe, of people with significantly different racial identifiers would be even more likely to identify them as the other, certainly not someone in their tribe.

One of my lunch buddies today was defending the racist Bundy. My friend said that in many cases the slaves would have had it better than free blacks now. He said his grandfather probably had slaves, presuming grandpa was one of the "Good" masters. I said lack of freedom and the fear of the master doing whatever he wished including raping your wife and or female daughters or selling family members to another plantation would trump whatever perceived security in having three meals and a roof would have if enslaved.
Then he said I was practically a slave myself, what choice did I have, I have to pay taxes etc? (My father worked in the Studebaker factory and I am an Architect thanks to the accessibility of higher education for everybody in the late sixties, early seventies.) I said I could do whatever I wished and did...and do. Would any of these opportunities have been available to a slave? No....not except in a very very few cases.

Just saw the press conference with the NBA commish, they're coming down pretty hard on Sterling. The guy really screwed up but I will say the fact that he said those things in a private conversation sort of troubles me. It does come somewhat close to thought police action.

Since when did disagreeing become "hatred"?

![]() Oh well, I too wish all people would attain enlightenment, Christ consciousness, whatever, tomorrow. They won't. In the meantime we're stuck with our collective imperfect asses. Byrd's life was clearly checkered. My take is that he did more actual repentance than the likes of Thurmond and by a wide margin. My dad used the N word through much of his adult life. In NM he had Latino guys working for him building houses and behind their backs referred to them as Mess'cans. Not one of the hot button slurs but there was clearly a sort of demeaning quality about it. OTOH, I never saw him mistreat anyone around race and one Latino guy worked for him for years. He got better about it over the years, we would watch NBA games when Bill Russell was one of the commentators and he really dug him. Seemed to have an elevating effect on his thinking. As you know, my dad was a veteran of the Pacific Theater and I heard him use the J word more than once. OTOH, in the early 80s they hosted two Japanese tourist couples in their house for 3 days - they were part of a group that had been organized by a couple my parents were friendly with - a Am/Euro man and his Japanese wife, who he'd met in '45 during the occupation. I was living nearby, I observed much of that and my dad seemed to genuinely enjoy himself. So what am I supposed to do, lump my dad in with active KKKers and Strom Thurmond because he doesn't get a pass just because they are worse than him?

Sterling turned out to be a family friend of one of my employees' parents. He describes Sterling as a "racist, misogynistic ****" going back 30 years.
