Good Show! Getting a new pump sounds like a good step. The dough will probably take care of the tank. I had very little doubt about you knowing not to continue to add fuel while cranking, but I'll risk insulting someone any day rather than standing by and watching them get hurt. Thanks for taking it the right way.

In the early days of the forum, like the year 2,000, there was a guy on the forum, I think it was "Deezel" who was a delta airline aircraft mechanic. I think he must have been involved in or observed a serious shop accident in his past because he constantly preached safety. I jokingly called him the self appointed safety officer, but he always seemed to offer safety sermons at the correct time. A very valuable contributor he was.

Thanks RS for the info on the brake clean. I would have never used it anyway for that purpose, but it is extremely important Information for all the motor heads on here.

Larry, in my experience that situation describes the "Safety Officer" in most companies. He is usually a guy who did something stupid that was the accepted routine way of doing things, until one time it caught up with him, and he got hurt. Now, he is the Safety Officer.

Made more good progress today. Power washed the gas tank, and painted it. I crawled under the car and power washed the underbody as well. I then did touch up painting to inhibit any more rust.

Turns out the fuel sending unit? Is bad? This is the part that checks the gas level. I keep searching for sending units, and it directs me to fuel pumps. Is there a more specific name? I may just repair it if I can't find one.

When the car fired, a mouse nest shot out of the exhaust.

This is the "sending unit". A wire is disconnected, and the float thing is completely missing.

Outstanding! It sounded good for the second or so that it spit and popped. Sounded like all 8 are hitting.

Don't know what to tell you about the sender. Is it good enough that you could make a float for it and it would work?

You're making progress. Keep on keeping on.

I think I can repair it. I will test it with a voltage tester tomorrow. I assume that I just check for resistance? The ohm gauge should fluctuate as I move the float?

Where would I find a float? The real question is; what happened to the old one?

If it wasn't in the tank, then it must have disintegrated in the rotten fuel.

Google around and you can find something to make a float out of. If worse comes to worse, go to aircraftspruce.com. I bought some replacement fuel tank floats for my Cessna from them. They would be high since they're certified for aircraft use, but I don't remember them as being crazy expensive.

Yes use your ohmmeter and move the arm back and forth. Don't worry too much about the reading, just look for smooth movement of the ohm value while moving the arm. An analog meter would be better for this purpose, but if all you have is digital just move the arm slowly.

Update, finally.

Ended up replacing all of the fuel lines, and all of the brake lines. The car at this point is drivable, save for a seized front left caliper. I ordered both calipers, as I believe the other is not doing much better. Found some rebuilt ones online for $11. Each!

The car drives like a true boat. All the shocks are bad.

I'm at the muffler shop getting a new exhaust put in, and the fuel sending unit started leaking. Oy. I knew I should have replaced it. They will clamp the exhaust together, and when I patch the leak, I can bring it back to get welded.

It's funny, it was not leaking when they pulled it in, but started after they started removing the old exhaust.

Good SHOW!

I fully expected the mechanicals to be fundamentally sound. You probably haven't driven it enough to shake it down yet, so I expect that the sensor and the muffler shop connection is nothing but coincidence.

preoil, preoil, preoil. Whatever you do after that doesn't matter, but dear god get oil in the cylinders and spin her over by hand a bunch before you fire it up.

I did pre oil before she fired.

I was stupid enough to take it on the freeway on her maiden voyage. Talk about a butt puckering experience !

The shocks I think may have to wait for the next owner. The tires are surprisingly not cracked at all. They look like they where installed mere months before it was parked.

It shakes on the freeway, I think it may be related to the brakes, but time will tell. Aside from that, the car feels pretty solid. All of the electrics work, power everything. I can turn the steering wheel with my pinkie finger. Even the original r12 system coughed to life, even though I believe it needs to be topped off. Good thing I have a 30lb jug laying around.

I've been scrubbing it all day today before I send it to get detailed. I just couldn't bring myself to drop a grenade like that on a friend of mine.
