Visiting a really cool place

Currently holed up in a hotel built from the wood of an 1874 shipwreck in L'Île-du-Havre-Aubert on the Isles de la Madelaine. I didn't even know these islands existed until we decided to do a tour of Quebec on our way to visit my MIL in PEI. The place has remarkable beaches and wonderful small towns. We'll be visiting a beach tomorrow rated as the 5th best beach in the world. It's a 5 hour ferry ride from Souris, PEI to get here. The cross commemorates Jacques Cartier's landing here in 1534.

It is a long drive, about 20 hours from Western NY which was where we started to drive. We also took in Quebec City and the Gaspe Peninsula before arriving in PEI then setting out for the Magdalens. Putting all those places together makes it worth it. When it comes to weather, the Madelaines have some of the mildest winters in Quebec due to the moderating effects of the water. It is isolated though. It's had a pretty sizeable population since the 19th century but electricity didn't arrive until the 1950's.

Water is pretty warm but the winds haven't dropped below about 20 knots since we arrived. Last night I'd guess it was gusting at 50+ knots. Takes some guts to sail around here but there are a fair number of sailboats in the local harbor. This steel schooner was on a transient dock. Looks like it's built for these conditions.

It's off season. $30 per person each way for ferry. $65 for car. About $100 per night for hotel room. Food prices same as rest of Canada. Campsites are closed by mid-September. $60 per hour to rent a Hobie Trimaran (in season). I thought that was pricey. No kayaker outfitters operating now.
