Use tranq darts (don't inhale), sneak them into her basement or somewheres else good before they wake. I'd be real surprised if you had to do this more than twice

Tom you have to do something about your raccoons. One of them is showing up on our front veranda quite often.

The dog always wants out to investigate. A raccoon could probably do some damage to our dog I fear.

One morning I walked out and there he was half way up a veranda post. Just staring at me.

At least no rabies or rabid activity here except if I agitate the wife. The raccoon has to be one of yours as he is wearing a mask I figured. Also his initial arrival occurred just about the time you entered Canada on your way to Greece.

Watching some rocky raccoon cartoons might give a person some ideal on how to get rid of them.

Seriously be careful around them as I imagine they could be a handful if they felt threatened. I have never heard of one attacking a human. Still that does not mean it has not happened.

The one I trapped made a pretty frightening growl/hiss as I got close to the cage. Covering the cage with an old blanket calmed it.

My dad's 1896 patent Winchester 58 silenced it. It was his first gun, gotten when he was about 8. He became an excellent shot and when too little to help butcher the hogs was given the job of shooting them between the eyes at butchering time.

The one that I trapped had pulled/woven the moving blanket cover completely into the wire of the trap which ruined the trap and the blanket.

If I did it again, I'd cover the trap while carrying it and take the cover off while in transport. When I approached the trapped animal, I held the blanket up to cover my face and body and the critter never made a sound.

That is the most sensible and humane solution Tom. If you use (can find) subsonic ammo you'll attract zero attention. Lather, rinse and repeat until you run out of raccoons.
Some trivia about your Winny 58-22. I have one too. The Model 58 was only produced between 1928 and 1931. Winchester produced 38,992 of them and they didn't bear serial numbers. A significant number of them were incorrectly roll stamped. Mine is stamped 1898. The patent was actually granted in 1899 to John Browning and assigned to Winchester. Any other number is an incorrect stamp and no, it doesn't increase it's value. I know a guy who has one that looks for all the world like it's stamped 1838. There was no Winchester in 1838. The 3 is clearly a poorly stamped 9. Take care of it!

It has a stubby bolt handle where dad decided in his latter years to customize it. He cut off the handle, repositioned it and silver soldered it....it broke off. Its hard to chamber the round with a 1/4" long stub. The coon expired while I struggled to get in the third round. I'll have to take more careful aim next time.

The bolt handle is real short to start with, I can imagine it's no fun. A smith might be able to do something with it or maybe you could find a bolt... I've got a few home-buggered guns. It almost never works out. One that comes to mind is an old Colt DA revolver. Some fool back in the 40s or 50's lost the sideplate screws and replaced them with plain old sheet metal screws, and too big ones to boot, the holes are now stripped out too large. It's in the relic bin now.

You should be embarrassed. But, when I have to shoot one out of the tops of the trees it goes like this sometimes. Took four shots the other night with me dressed in flip flops only. Now that's embarrassing.

We had a population bloom here one year. I shot 31 coons in as many days after relocating at least half a dozen. The last one I relocated I put a big dot of florescent orange spray paint on his back, took him about 6 miles away into a separate drainage. He was back in a week. That's when I started killing them. Here's a screenshot of a video I took about a week ago. Three juveniles in a tree on my patio. They had been 5 originally as babies last spring, came around with their momma. The mothers will turn mean to them and send them out on their own when the reach a certain age/size. For now they're cute little Disney critters but pretty soon I'll have to deal with them. I don't mind one or two coming around now and then, but I'm thinking with all the rain we had this summer more babies will have survived and we'll have another over population situation and attendant forage shortage. That's when they begin fighting and spraying and trying to tear the roof off the henhouse.
