Whew! That Was Close

Mercedes-Benz Was Set To Rebadge Nissan Pickups - Road & Track

Rumors of a Mercedes-Benz pickup have circulated quietly within the automotive industry for years, but its development repeatedly saw difficulties and delays. Daimler had initial negotiations with VW to produce a Mercedes-Benz version of the Volkswagen Amarok, but the talks never gathered momentum.

The motto, The Best or Nothing, prevailed I guess.

The Titan is not a great pickup. The Dodge Ram would be a perfect candidate, given the old Daimler Chrysler connection and the perfect ability to slip on a mondo Mercedes grille where the current chrome plated prow currently sits.

With as many buses and heavy trucks as they make, you would think making their own pickup would be easy.

What's wrong with slapping a bed on a sprinter? They make a slat side for it already.

I think that there is some type of U.S. tariff in place for imported pickup trucks which creates a price disadvantage compared to a comparable American truck.

Rebadging . . . was it ever a good idea, for any car maker? Toyota Matrix become Pontiac Vibe . . .

But if they did (and my soul was desireable enough to trade for one...) you could get a CDI V6 and all wheel drive...

With more bed space, better visibility, and easier to maneuver than the standard bloated pickup we see these days.

I see no downside to sprinter based pickups. Especially equipped with the 4 direction low profile genius dump bed the unimogs can have. Best work design ive ever seen

I've seen a few of the Sprinters with beds. Pretty cool but I would prefer the extended 3500 high roof.

4 direction dump? I don't think automatic dumping dirt on the cab is a good idea, union back hoe operators will grievance the truck builder to say that the equipment is taking their job of dumping dirt on the cab. . .

One of the problems with a side dump is operators can stand a rear dump on it's tail gate if the load sticks. A side dump would lay in it's side with less effort.

I've seen track dump "trucks" with a 2 way dump and swiveling cab to eliminate turning around.

Problem is G wagons are hugely expensive ( even used ) for seemingly no good reason. Kind of like the Land Rover Defender 90 / 110 expensive when new and then becoming a boutique high end truck when Discos and others in the 1990 / 2000 range can barely be given away.
