Hobby horse competition

OK, i’ve seen it all now. I’m not talking about the semi-silly element of these young ladies riding a hobby horse through some sort of faux equestrian event. I’ve read about that before, seems like wholesome fun.

But what floors me in this video is the jump this young lady made under her own power. OMG, if I was a track coach looking for the next female high jump phenomenon I would be talking to this young lady’s parents tomorrow.

How high do you think this jump was?

That was the range I was thinking. I’m not sure I could’ve jumped that high with that kind of jump even in my prime. During the ‘76 Olympics a few buddies and I put together a high jump pit in the backyard using 4 or 5 mattresses. The Fosbury flop is a great jumping style, but no way in hell could you do it in a sand pit, you would break your neck. But the mattresses were good enough. I’m 6’0” and in one afternoon’s practice. I got up to a jump of 5’0”.

I was close to being able to dunk a basketball at that time. I could jump up and grab the rim with a closed fist, but you need to be a few inches higher than that for an actual stuff. Not trying for peabrained boasting, just saying I was not a complete slouch in jumping and I’m not sure I could’ve made that jump the way she did.

The hobbyhorse event seems a bit goofy, but I see now that it is one heck of a work out for these young ladies. Kudos.

On the subject of impressive female athletics. I was doing a little searching to see if I could determine how high that jump was, not conclusive yet, and I ran across this video accidentally:

OK, or the very important issue of just how high was that jump, I saw this video, which looks like the same apparatus, they said the winning jump was 139 cm which is just under 4’7”. For a teenage girl, average height, about 5’6”, that is pretty impressive.
