What are these wooden beams?
I am in Colorado at the top of a mountain in a ski lodge. Looking at the fabrication of the lodge, I see what appeared to be lodgepole ceiling beams, but there are numerous bolts through each beam. So did they hollow out the lodgepole and insert steel girders with bolts to hold them. Does this mean that the lodge poles are only for looks?
Looks like I can’t post pics with an iPhone. Rats. Will do later. . |

I use https://postimages.org/ for photos on my iPhone. I've gotten to where I can do it pretty quickly. I usually need to crop the photo first to get rid of any of the extra info around it. Then on postimage you can select the photo size. It gives you a list of links, I copy the second one and then click on the photo icon in the vBulletin control panel.
One advantage of that is the photo appears on the page without needing to click on the thumbnail. Also, it doesn't consume any Peach Parts memory aside from the tiny amount for the characters of the link. IIRC There's a limit to how many photos you can post using the P.Parts software. Here's an example of a photo I just happened to see recently and saved, don't ask me why.

Hah!!
That would be an individual that could inspire wood methinks. I would research that in some detail given the chance, but I suspect it's not to be.

Dang, that's a tough one. On the right side of the photo, about in the middle are three pairs of holes. I'm wondering if that vertical piece was set into a carved out portion of the larger, horizontal pieces, and either large wooden dowels or bolts driven in to fasten it all together. If it was genuine timber framing, It would probably be dowels, but I think you would usually see the end of them sticking out a little bit, the cavity looking aspect is hard to figure.
In the two places on the left side of the photo where beams are joined close to the wall, possibly there are pieces placed into dados about halfway through. Plywood may have been a reality when this was constructed, I could imagine some of that 1-1/8" thick plywood placed about 3/4 the way in and then bolts run through. It would tie the whole thing together pretty well. I'm just guessing, that's odd, I've not seen anything like that before. Large wooden dowels sticking out, maybe a half inch or an inch would look a lot nicer.

We did a large job way back when, 'O2-'03 about, the kitchen had a large vaulted ceiling, maybe 15 feet at the peak. There were large 6 x 8 cedar beams looking like they were supporting things, but it was all for show. The actual structure for roof support was well hidden 2 x 12 rafters. Easier, stronger, and cheaper than using attractive wood for support.

The beams look real to me with steel connecting plates....just guessing really as I have not seen such a method before.

That photo makes it clear. The actual rafters outside are clearly visible, I'm surprised that they are hanging out that far. They haven't even been cut vertically on the ends. Looks like untreated wood. It's just weird having them hang out that far - if nothing else it detracts from the illusion inside.

they look structural to me. I can only guess at the oddball rafters two feet above the interior....scaffolding?
