UK numberplates help / opinion

i dont know if you guys understand the UK license (sp? ) plate system:-

the first or last letter:-
X 123 ABC (X)
ABC 123 X (X)

Is the year - so my 1996 is a P pre-fix P779 KLS

the rest of the numbers and letters are essentially random, but certain letter combinations are assigned to areas - CLX is london for example..

we dont have any system to randomly choose a numberplate as some states appear to have - so CL 420 MB is not a valid plate.. IYSWIM...

so....
lesson over - I have a rather limited choice on numbers for my car - I can only choose OLDER plates than my car is - i.e. P (1996) N (1995) etc etc (missing I Z O Q reg's for various reasons..

I have settled on these as an idea - by modifying the A to make a 4 with the (illegal.. ) addition of a couple of 'wrong colour' bolts

which do you think is best?

oh - and have a look here for ideas / prices / legalities

http://www.espot.newreg.com/?t=904336a2ad

and I dont want my name on the plate - I hate that

Why are people in the UK willing to pay such outrageous sums for specialized license plates? What is their attraction? I read somwhere of people selling plates for thousands of pounds.

it hides the age of the car..

and is a snob thing

having P779 KLS says very obviously 'I have and old 1996 car' - i thought it would be nice to let people guess...

have a look here for silly money plate:-

here -number plate 4D

Now I get it! Of course it is hard for me to understand since the newest car I have ever owned is a 1985.
What is driving the differences in price on the plates in the link you posted? What do people want on their plates and why? I couldn't figure it out from the registration numbers listed there.

How about:

C142 OMB illegally spaced and with a wrong colour bolt to read CL42O MB. You put a black bolt and a space at the foot of the 1, it looks effective enough. C142 OMB is probably not readily available, though.

I like A20 CLX spaced as you suggest.

In the UK, "private" or "cherished" number plates offer a mixture of personalisation and status, it is that simple. The fewer letters and the lower the numbers, the better. Combinations that spell a word are valuable, too. Words followed by numbers is preferrable to numbers followed by words: I have no idea why! Short registrations look so much better on the car.

For instance, A1 (is it still in Earl Russell's family?) would be ultra-desireable. I would expect that to fetch 250k at least. K1 NGS recently sold for that sum. FU 2 recently sold for 100k. Geoffery Archer reputedly owned ANY 1 in the 80s: would be worth a stack. One not-very-funny TV comedian has COM 1C; a TV magician has MAG 1C.

My ideal plate would be JR 1 or JJR 1. I have seen JR 1 on a Jaguar XK8 on several occasions, must be a local car. 6 JR is on sale for 23k; JR 7 is available for 38k; JJR 48 is 4k and JJR 61 is 3.25k.

My plate S5 JJR was a mere 250 quid plus transfer fee of 80. I previously chose letters that made it appear under all except the closest examination either SS JJR or 55 JJR (vanity, vanity) but presently it is simple S5 JJR.

They are going up in value.

i contacted the dvla (the number plate authority for our colonial friends ) about C142 OMB - its never been released - so I have requested it.

they have a bizzare system that the requested numbers come up 'randomly' in auction...

could be next week - or in 5 years

C142 OAB for example has been released...

any other two letter combos that might be good?

C142 O**...
