MB hazard triangle
Did any Mercedes come to North America with the hazard triangle in the trunk. I would like to put one in a 95 W124 car. I noticed the outline of the triangle on the trunk pad but there is no triangle.
Did anyone ever installed the hazard warning traingle in their rides? |

Only Euro market cars came with them. In Europe, you're required by law to have them.

My 1981 300 SD has one. But it was a Euro delivery car, don't know if that makes a diference.

I am bit confused. The W201 needs mounting brackets but the W124 already have mounting brackets under the trunk lid liner? (after 2 min of reading) Oh no wait, I do need the bracket that hols the upper part of the triangle Last edited by E300D; 04-24-2004 at 11:14 AM. |

On the W201, you can see the square mounting holes just left of center on the inside of the trunk lid. That's where the latch snaps into. The triangle's stand legs hook into the the holes at the bottom edge of the trunk lid.

i retrofitted one for my trunk as well. very worthwhile for safely, it is impossible not to notice the large warning triangle. the obvious reason for its size is so that motorists traveling at 120+mph on the autobahn can see it readily. keep in mind the added weight of the warning triangle on the trunk lid, it will close with less force required. in fact, i can simply let go of my trunk lid now from approx. 6" and it will close rather nicely with a harmonious thump.

I believe that PGA, Potomac German Auto, sells used ones for about $20. The mounting clip is cheap from any dealership parts department.

I dropped by House of Imports a few days ago to ask about this desired triangle. They said it's illegal because it's not DOT compliant especially for a driver like me with no commercial driver's license nor the training to operate one. Something about me thinking of putting it on the road, etc. Any truth to this? I'm not about to get just any triangle ...
So what's the best way to get one? Junkyard? |

I like the idea (hairbrained and without factual basis) that NHTSA or DOT will let consumers have pyro road flares, but not reflective triangles.

Do you know how to do that? It's not that easy.

These things look so much like a Slow Moving Vehilcle emblem that farmers put on the back of their tractors I'm surprised that people don't go to their local John Deere dealer and buy one of those. IMHO anyone that can't see a four wheel drive articulated tractor that is lit up like a Christmas tree isn't going to see that stupid little SMV emblem, therefore they should see an eye doctor.

NHTSA and DOT...aren't those the same guys that deemed euro headlights unfit for American roads?

Of course, safety triangles triple the chances of putting your eye out . . .
