Cleaning air intake below plate, 190E

Hello all.
I have heard that cleaning the plate and the air intake of the fuel distributor with a cloth and some solvent makes wonders to idle smoothness and engine hesitating. Has anyone tested that?
I am curious about how can that part of the fuel distributor get so dirty as someones say, with a black rubbish. I suppose that the only way is due to backfiring of the engine, is this true?

The procedure is: remove the air filter housing, and with a cloth carefully clean, first the plate and its edge, then deflect it down and the surroundings of the fuel distributor as deep as you can (a couple of inches or so, the rest is unreachable), with great care not to allow dirt enter into the engine.

Best regards,
Sergio

Clean throttle body also.

It is blow-by gases that are recirculated that cause the oily deposits. Look at the plumbing of the IAC and you will find that it can pull air from the valve cover. I found the biggest improvement by cleaning the throttle body. Took off the air flow sensor and fuel distributor as an assembly to get at the throttle body and cleaned it with a rag and carb cleaner. Huge improvement in idle quality.

What is the IAC?
Is that easy to clean the throotle body at home? I suppose not.
Did you find any improvementt when you cleaned only the intake under the sensor plate?

Thanks.

Wow, I never actually thought of seperating the intake to clean the inside. I have sprayed a ton of carb cleaner in there and just figured it would do the trick of cleaning as it gets sucked into the intake when I start the engine! Guess not though huh! Will nee to dismantle this weekend!!! Thanks!!!

I could'nt be arsed the take the fuel distributer off so I just put my finger as far down inside the throttle body as I could and I pulled out a thick disposit of damp soot from near the bottom, the upper areas were wiped round and I had a look at the butterfly which is right at the bottom and can only be reached with say a toothbrush, which is what I'll use tomorrow along with some carb cleaner and the vacume cleaner to suck out any loose debris.

After I did the initial cleanout on Monday the difference is huge. No more poor cold starts, cleaner throttle response and good steady idle.

A transformation for free!

Mike.
