85 190e - is it 8- or 16-valve?
I just got a used 85 190e 2.3, but it was imported from Germany by the original owner and the VIN doesn't cross at Mercedes to anything (actually they think it's a 2001)
Is there an easy way to tell which engine it is? It's got an automatic, which I understand should mean 8 valves, but I want to be sure, and I don't want to take off the valve cover. Thanks. |

It's a 102, 2.3 liter 8 valve.

Does the valve cover have any writing on it? More than likely a 2.3 8V.

What are the first 6 digits of the VIN number?? That will tell what engine is in the car

The way I understand it, from an external appearance stand point, the valve cover should be embossed with 16V. As well the 16 valve engine has the spark plugs going through the valve cover.
On the right side of the engine (exhaust side) you will notice a "Number" stamped on a machined area of the crankcase. Perhaps this number is of more value, especially when you need to obtain parts. |

It's as simple as opening the hood . . . and looking at the valve cover . . . "Mercedes-Benz" on the first line, then "2.3-16" on the second. Pretty darn simple. The body modifications, the sport seating, the VDO gauge cluster in the center console are also hints, but the proof is in the engine bay.
