Talking Ignition Woes

Hello To Everyone, Especially to anyone who has a solution

Okay I have been reading the info about ignitions and how to replace to tumbler. My situation is a little weird and different than it just not turning.
My key will not go in whatsoever, BUT the silver front turns, in fact it will turn all the way around in circles, so I can line it up with that little notch at 2 o'clock. I have a little piece of wire that fits into it and I can feel it engage the little spring thing. I am a little confused though, because What I have read says there are two notches? To use a U shaped wire. I have no idea where the second notch would be. Also without having the key in, even if I push the notches, will I be able to pull the tumbler out? I can push a screwdriver in it or something if it is just a matter of having something to pull on. I already ordered the replacement tumbler and have it in hand. I just need to get the other one out!
My Mercedes is an 1983 380 SEL, if that matters to the specifics.
And I guess once it comes out, I just put the new tumbler in the black barrel and push it back on? Will it just click in or is there something special I have to do?

ANYONE who can give me some heads up will be a HERO

I do NOT want to have to go pay someone hundreds of dollars that I don't have if I can figure this out. I have fixed and rewired many cars and appliances because I hate the thought of paying someone for 10 minutes of work.
HELP!

Many Thanks,
Meshale

info

disclaimer- first my only experience is with a 380sl, second it is friday so my thinking is suspect.

1) not all cars have two areas to depress (u shape to depress not needed for all cars, some only 1 point to depress-- a strong straight thin thing only needed).

2) click on my id, ericgr. find all posts by me. find the post on changing the tumbler/lock. read the notes.

you need to find the point where the tumble engages. when you find it, you need a strong pusher. per the notes I gave (per 2 above), a flimsy wire will not do it.

and a big mess becomes an even bigger one

Hi,
thanks for your reply, I followed the links and printed out everything you had wrote before. I cannot get the black cylinder that surrounds the tumbler off. I have tried to turn it, yank it, pry it. I push the wire in, feel the spring enage which I assume means the paw has been pushed in but it seems to do nothing to release anything. I originally could not get my key in at all, after about an hour of messing with I got the key in, jiggled the steering wheel, used the back a jigsaw to apply vibration, everything I could think of and it still would not turn. I appled some more vibration and then the key started to turn and then broke. So now I am really just up a creek. I can still turn that outside metal piece around so I can still line it up and get the wire in to the slot but in reality the whole tumbler is not turned to the 2 o'clock position, does this matter or is it just that the paw has to be able to be pushed? I am at the point of seriously considering drilling the old one out. Have you ever heard of this working? I don't know what a mechaninc would even do at this point other than drill it since they key has now broke off. Many thanks to any more advice
