Transmission adjustments? 1987 560SEL bumping into 3rd
Hi,
Thanks for any help you can be. A few transmission questions: 1 - My 1987 560SEL transmission seems to not be right. From 1st to 2nd it switchs smoothly at about 20 MPH and about 1600 RPM's. From 2nd to 3rd though, it sometimes switches smooth but sometimes with a moderate bump. It does this switch smoothly and with bump at about 26 MPH and 1600 RPM's. Is this the right gear switch RPM and MPH and how can I eliminate this bump? 2 - Overdrive - when traveling about 45 MPH at appx 2000 RPM's I press the pedal to the floor. The RPM's go from 2000 to 5000 and the vehicle does not really accelerate during this rev up. It takes about one full second (while the engine RPM's are rising but the car is not accelerating (side note - is this called flair?)) for the power and speed to kick in. Should it take this long? - It seems too long to me. Again, thanks for any help you can be. ![]() Lance |

After reading more posts on this subject I am not sure about something. When I first put the car into drive - this is what I am refering to above as 1st. I have read some posts that say 560SEL's starts off in 2nd - is that right? If so the above information should be 2nd into 3rd is smooth and 3rd into 4th gets bump sometimes.
Its an automatic so can someone let me know if car starts off in 2nd (when I start driving slowly and am not putting the pedal too far down) ![]() Thanks! |

The 560 SEL with its 722.323 starts off in 2nd gear. Do you feel a clunk thru out the car or in the rear? If not and it’s a little harder then the 2nd to 3rd shift I would say it is normal. If the 3rd to 4th shift is very hard then the problem could be the 3rd to 4th accumulator piston, valve body.

Thanks very much for your reply. It is from 3rd to 4th , the clunk is from the rear and much different that the 2nd to 3rd (which is smooth). Is the accumulator piston, valve body adjustable ( I have the pan off now for a new gasket) and if so can you tell me how to do it or where to look on how to do it.
Again I appreciate any help and am grateful. Thanks, Lance |
