No compressor for front springs?

I know the rear springs just fall out of the perches when you undo the lower A-arm...but I needed a Klann to do the fronts on my W124.036...can anyone explain how it is possible to remove the fronts without compressing the spring? Does one have to disconnect the hub assembly or something?
