Strut upper mounts
I have to replace the upper shock absorber mounts on my 86 300E. I like to talk to someone who has replaced the mounts themselves. It looks fairly simple to me but any advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance |

I have not replaced them but i did unbolt one when i was changing out the bump stops. It was as straight forward as it looks. No need to remove the struts either, just have a friend compress the piston, its a bit tough, but I was able to do it and I would put myself at below average as far as arm strength is concerned. Once the piston is compressed the mount will fall down through the wheel well. Dont forget to put a little loctite on the nuts and I believe the torque value was 20 nm.

I have replaced several. Easy enough to do once the struts are removed, which is also easy. Just make sure the Control Arm is resting firmly on a jackstand so that the spring remains captive by gravity. To be clear, all of the weight of the car should be on the jackstand. There is a 'notch' in the CA near that wheel that receives a standard concave-top jackstand perfectly.
For "extra credit", I applied a sealant to the mounting surface on the strut tower to prevent corrosion there.
