What would cause it to die?

My 86 560sl has been experiencing a hard starting issue lately. Always starts right up when cold, sometimes it will crank but won't start when warm, but if I crank it a few times it will start and run fine from that point. This morning I was driving along and the motor just cuts off in traffic-not cool. I re-cranked it and after about 7-8 cranks it fired right up. I'm OK with stuff like this but whoa is me if this happens to my wife-I'll never hear the end of it.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
