M103 EHA Trouble

Hi All,
Our 124 Wagon is one of those rare birds built on a Monday...
Anyway, Less trhan 10k mi ago the EHA was leaking pretty bad. We replaced it ($$$). We have been having hard start issues (warm start) for the last 18mo or so and the EHA is leaking again. I really don't like the idea of going though EHAs every 10k mi!
Any thoughts out there? Any chance we could get away w/ just replacing the seal? Would that help the warm starts? What to replace it with (any brand better)? What causes it? Just a quirk of the otherwise very lovely M103 (like the head gaskets)? I've worked on MBs my whole life and have been very used to replacing a part only once in the cars life.
Thanks!
-Matt-

Exclamation

You are VERY un-lucky! All 3 Of the 190e's in my family still have the original EHA's!

Bosch IS the only company that ever made that type of part on a fuel system!

You car (& all M013/104 CIS engines ) uses the same EHA as any 16V 190E, 420SEL/560SL/SEL, 500SL, & 1987 & later 190E 2.3! there are thousands of those cars in a "JUNK" yard

a guy on ebay has eha's for 9,99 plus 19.99 shipping ...it may be worth picking one up that way.

used, but inexspensive.

I carry a spare ovp, fuel relay and klima relay as precautionary back-ups. May consider one of these eha's

Aren't there o-rings between the EHA and the fuel distributor? I recall replacing my EHA on my 560SL and replacing some o-rings too.

I assume you replaced those when you put in the new EHA but even so is it possible they are the source of the leak? Have you checked that out?

When I was having similar warm start problems with my car I tried the EHA replacement first but that was not the problem. It turned out that the solution was the replacement of the 8 injectors, injector seals and the rubber air piping which feeds from the idle control valve on back all the way to the intake at each injector. Once I replaced all of those parts my car started perfectly hot and cold and idles absolutely like new again...well worth the time and money.

I had at least one injector leaking down that was causing the warm start problems and elected to just replace all of them as they were all original with over 100K on them. Air leaks in the piping was causing fast idle above what the ICV could control (750-800 RPM). Now it idles at 550 to 600 and is smooth as silk at idle and through the entire operating range. The difference is dramatic.

The reason I mentioned the o-ring seals was that I spotted them for sale in Fastlane. Could be just those. I'll have to look closer and see if it's leaking there or if it's the unit itself. Too bad it looks like my '85 190E soon-to-be parts car won't have the right part... I hate to think I need to buy another one new. The last one we got from the dealer for something close to $400. at least it's only $200 at Fastlane. I need to check for a warrantee on the original, though it's probably been over a year and it wasn't installed by the dealer...
We've suspected an injector leaking down for quite a while, but haven't been able to pin it down. It's been faily liveable, but with the temp clearing 90 more days than not this year up here, it's getting to be more than just a mild irritation.
Thanks for the help guys!
Any other suggestions?
Cheers,
-Matt-

If it turns out to be the EHA itself that is leaking and you want a good used one I have the one I pulled from my 560SL which I would sell for some nominal sum...but check the o-rings first, I would bet that is where your leak is coming from...did you change them when you replaced it last time or just re-used the old ones? I think my new one came with new rings but I know I used new ones when I replaced mine...I never re-use o-rings.

It is the EHA itself that it bleeding and quite a bit.
How much for your used one? It was working fine when it was pulled?
Thanks!

Mine was fine, changing it was done trying to debug the warm start trouble and it made no difference after I replaced it but I left the new one in anyway and kept the old one. Make me an offer on it...you can email me at info@minoxdoc.com if you want it.
