M104.992 Tensioner Problem...

I'm working on a water pump project for my 1993 300E 3.2 with a 104.992 engine. When I try to untension my drive belt for removal, the belt tensioner does not tighten or loosen the belt anymore although I see the tension pointer move form left to right and vice versa when I turn the tensioning nut. I need some advice on how to move forward. How do I proceed with removing my belt if my tensioner does not slacken anymore? Please help...anyone? I tried to search for similar threads with no luck.
