removing b2 piston from auto transmission

I have a 722.18 auto transmission. ('81 300D).
was trying to remove the B2 piston, but learned that it has a ring just like the
engine piston rings for sealing against the bore. the b2 piston ring is
caught in the retaining ring groove for the cover on the side of the transmission.

any ideas how I can extract the b2 piston? sort of stuck right now.
