New Engine Break In Rules?
Hello All,
I wanted to see what everyone's opinion was on break in time/rules for a 'new' engine. I just installed my rebuilt 116.960 into my 380SL. New mains/rod bearings, new rings, heads done, timing/oil pump chain etc. Everything except new pistons. Tranny was rebuilt as well. Is any one oil better for break in? RPM/speed limits? For how long? What else am I forgeting? Thanks! -M-

do you have an owners manual?
i would follow their rules.
if you don't i would say from memory, take it easy for the first hundred miles or so not taking the engine to redline. if traveling on the highway use different speeds. take it to a remote road and using third gear accelerate fairly hard and back off about 20 times to seat the rings, and change the oil at 500 to 1000 miles. dont use synthetic til the engine is broken in. tom w
