Hydraulic fluid leaking out of sun visor

There is oil leaking on the passenger seat from the visor on my 98 500sl!!!!

I know it must be the latch that holds the Pano top. My question is 1. What is its proper name so I can call around to find one...The Mercedes dealership is closed.

2. can I unplug something so I can drive it? It starts leaking when I turn the ignition key on!?

Thank you for your help

I will offer what I know about my 1992 SL.

The front latches are prone to leaking and can make quite a mess when they go. Parts are available on FastLane and not too hard to change out. Just e-mail Phil if you want to replace them yourself.

I'm puzzled about your saying that it starts leaking as soon as the key is turned. When my latch leaked it only leaked while I was operating the top. I don't think the pump should run unless the top is being operated.

Do you have any warning lights illuminated such as the top operation switch blinking? If so, you may need to manually operate the latches until they are all locked. Perhaps it senses that one is not locked?

At any rate, if the pump is running, it is located under the spare tire. I would expect there to be a connector on or near the pump that could be unplugged.

There ae several discussions about these latches that should pop up if you do a search.

Keep us posted!

Found fuse

I found a fuse in the trunk that dissabled the hydraulic pump and it stopped the leaking so I can at least drive it!

I can't find how dissasemble the door post to fix this issue on my own. Anybody have experience with this without taking it to the dealer and getting "high-grossed"

I looked on Fastlane and could not find it. Do you have a link?

Thank you for your help

Talking Ah HA

Now that I am more familiar with navigating through this site, I have found the info I needed. Thank you.

The only thing I cannot find is the darn latches themselves!! Where did you all buy them for 124 dollars?

yes very familiar with this.
The fluid tends to pool in the area where the latch rests , and will leak out into the interior compartment after driving around.
The latch is fairly easy to replace.
Just take off the top cover above the sun visors to access the latch.
Undo the clip holding the hydraulic line on, then unbolt the latch and bolt the new one on.
of course clean up any residual fluid while the latch is out.
paper towels wick the fluid up pretty good, and some strategically sprayed brake kleen does not hurt , just keep a rag handy.
Do not kink the hydraulic line.
