This is the way to go:
http://63.89.49.212/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1FX0MB1RS1RA13EFN5&year=1992&make=MB&model=500-E-001&category=M&part=P%2FS+Fluid Much cheaper than most dealers stock (note $8.xx/liter not/quart). Some would say Dexron III will be fine and it may be, I had it in there for a year and saw no ill effects, others use it exclusivly. But, not worth the risk at the price. Transmission formula is changed over time and is not guaranteed to be compatible with the engineer's original specs. Now someone can correct me.

I vote for using simple power steering fluid like what Valvoline sells ($2/qt). I understand it's like transmission fluid, but without the additives.

P/S fluids are basically the same a hydraulic fluids. Viscosity is similar to a 10W oil, but those with higher VI index are probably closer to a 10W-30. ATFs are in this same general range.
An important attribute of hydraulic oils is having some ZDDP anti-wear additive, but they don't need the friction modifier used to prevent clutch chatter in auto trans fluids. Duke |

Just go to your dealer and pick some up.
They like 500Es at dealers and will be nice to you if you're nice to them.

They're really nice, to the tune of about $15 a quart. I did buy some.

Can't imagine why anyone would think some product at Pep Boys labeled "power steering fluid" has any relationship whatsoever to what Mercedes recommends.

lkchris, What's wrong with regular power steering fluid?
For coolant, MB requires MB coolant. But we know G-05 is the same and works well. For brake fluid, MB requires MB brake fluid. But we know any DOT4 works well. For bearing grease, MB requires MB bearing grease. But we know any hi-temp wheel bearing grease with EP additives works well. For power steering fluid, MB requires MB power steering fluid. Can you tell us why regular ps fluid won't work?
