86 300e burning blue
Good morning everyone.
So I took the plunge and replaced the valve guide seals. All the info on this site was greatly appreciated. Problem is I noticed that #4 & #6 cylinder spark plugs continue to be wet when pulled after a night of sitting. Bigger problem is I can be driving down the road and the car will start belching a lot of smoke. The smoke is blue and will have an oily catalytic smell to it and is very strong. A guy behind me was literally waving his hand in front of his face. I can shut the car off, and 20 minutes later take it out and put it through different paces and it won't smoke at all. The fact that when it smokes it is "REALLY" bad and then it stops. Anybody have any ideas? |

Agree with DSP...
However most likely the valve guides are just worn out & seals won't fix that problem!

burning oil
Uh oh.............! After a couple of beer they all looked the same.
How do you tell the difference? They were all the same colour. I did notice that one seal out of twelve was not snug on the valve stem. The part that baffles me is belching of blue is sporatic. |

oil smoke
if you had laid out all the seals and looked at the little round holes at the top you would have seen that 6 of them had larger holes than the others.i guess after a couple of beers that they all look the same.don't feel bad i did the same thing myself many years ago but i caught it before finishing and only cost me another set of seals.i seem to remember that in 1990 a set of those seals had 6 of one colour and 6 of another.wonder why they changed? david poole european performance dallas tx.

Is it worth saving a few dollars by purchasing an aftermarket valve stem seal set? Fastlane's is half the list price and made in Germany. Thanks.

valve stem seal kit-exhaust have yellow coated ring and intake have black coated ring, use install sleeve when doing intake seal
I copied and pasted this from DIY article about changing valve stem seals. Personally, I use the seal kit I get from the dealer. I just figure with all that labor I'm not going to take a chance on such an inexpensive part. |
