Hi,
I'm trying to remove the governor due to a no upshift condition. The car stalled and when I got it started the tranny will no longer shift out of first gear. I removed the rear transmission to lower the transmission, but I still don't have enough space to remove the governor cover and pull out the governor. The book says it can be done with the tranny in the car. What other parts do I have to remove and are there any tricks to get more space? This tranny has the transmission upshift delay feature so it has a hydraulic line that connects to the cover of the governor. Any help/tip is greatly appreciated. Thanks |

On that car I always drop the exhaust hangers & support the muffler at the rear..that allows the trans to drop down farther.
Then wedge a 2 x 4 on the drive shaft to gain more room.

Thanks for the quick response. I've already disconnected the exhaust hangers and even separated the exhaust from the converter. The trannny will only drop so far before the engine hits the firewall. Should I also disconnect the drive shaft and flex disc from the transmission output shaft to gain more lateral room before I wedge the 2x4 to get more clearance? BTW, can a defective upshift delay system cause a no shift condition and can I just remove the solenoid and tubing and plug the governor pressure test port and the return line hole on the governor cover?

All has gone well so far....I had the typical--spring jammed the gears on the secondary pump and broke the governor gear. I saw several posts saying to just remove the secondary pump gears and another post said to install washers on the plunger of the secondary pump so doens't engage the governor. Can I just remove the gears, the shut off piston (plunger), compression spring and spring retainer?--this will leave just the housing, o-ring, cap and lockring in place. Will this work and will it cause any problems?
