I just had a free sliding window problem. No up or down but the motor runs. I took it apart. The familiar (mentioned a lot on this forum) plastic/nylon slider is broken in two. I slid it right out the end. Do I just get a new one and slide it back in and reinsert the scissors jack type thing? Or is there some part I am missing that stops the plastic slider from sliding out of the track. Or does the window travel keep the piece from sliding out the end.
I am trying to order parts and don't want to just order the slider if I need more. ...JR |

You should only need the slide jaw. You will need to grind the old one off and then peen the new one on. I made a tool to do this, but you will have to use a helper, a punch and a hammer.
Good luck

I have done this repair myself and it is not hard. You need to remove the window motor/lifting arm assembly to do it. I used a coarse grinding disc on the end of my drill to thin the rivet down. When it is thin enough, you can hammer it out with anything that will act as a punch. Insert the new rivet with the plastic piece attached and use a hammer and some sort of punch to smash the end of the rivet down. Be sure you back up the opposite end of the rivet carefully. Don't get in a hurry and it won't be hard. Mine has worked flawlessly for 2 years now.

The small, plastic sliding piece is held in place by a rivet (copper or brass, I think). Iused appropriate size driil to driil out the "bradded" side 'til the rivet was weal enough to drive it out with a punch. Install new slide and rivet provided with it and "brad" the rivet carefully with hammer while plastic side of the RIVET is properly supported on underside.

Door
How does the lift unit come out of the door?
Does the motor come out with it? Is the rivet a Benz part I need to order separately? |

JR I've replaced the little plastic slides in both rear doors on my 91 350SDL. I think I got both of them from Rusty Cullins, 800-741-5252. Parts Shop likely has them, too. Rivet comes with the slide. On one of mine, I removed the entire lift mechanism with the motor; on the other, I detached the motor from the mechansim inside the door & remoived only the lift mechanism. It's really fairly easy & straight forward. Take a look at it, study it, & I think you'll see how it is installed, etc. Be careful not to cut hands on edges of sheet metal openings in the door.

It's easy. Don't worry about it so much and just do it. I think the parts are under $10. Just take your time and make mental notes about how stuff came apart.
Good luck. |
