help with W126 500SEL HC emmissions
I recently purchased a 1981 500SEL. When I took it in to the smog station here in Stockton, I failed the Smog check due to excessive HC (HydroCarbon) emmissions.
At low idel, the maximum allowable is 120ppm, I was outputting 2392ppm. At high idel, the maximum allowable is 150ppm, my output was 438ppm. Help please. |

This is a Grey Market. It does not have any of the following: Catalytic converter, EGR, O2 sensors, Evap Canister. I have the referee certificate to show that it is not supposed to have any of these.
My other readings were all very good. %CO2 %O2 | HC PPM | | CO% | TEST RPM MEAS MEAS MAX GP MEAS MAX GP MEAS Idel 627 9.0 7.9 120 270 2392 1.50 3.00 0.23 2500 2502 11.0 4.4 150 300 438 1.50 3.00 1.29 I can say that I do have a rough idel. As soon as the motor is brought up over 1000rpm, the engine runs smoothly. |

The station that I took the car to does have a dyno, but the opertor did not run on the dyno. I recently moved out here from Michigan and I'm still getting to know California and California laws. I do like this car, but I know I've got some work ahead of me.
Here's a run down of the car: Interior: seats-leather, orgional, worn. dash-cracked. radio- original is in the trunk, and works, excpet tape deck. Alpine head unit installed Climate control- operational, sounds like there is a small vacuum leak on some settings windows-electric, functioning electric seats, work seat heaters-work' guages-good 180,450 km on the odometer all interior labels and guages are in German and kiloMeters. Body-straight, minor blemishes in paint. engine- ... as discussed... I plan on taking it to the Bavarian European motors here in Stockton for a full tune-up... the 15,000 mile tuneup. and a complete A service. I took it to the Smog station to establish a base line. Looking at the Smog history at http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/vehtests/pubtstqry.aspx VIN: WDB12603712011713 I found that the car has been to a referee in the past to pass the smog. |

I do appreciate the passing of info. Unfortunatly, I leared all of those lessons the hard way. I am confident that once I get a good tuning, I will be able to get the car to pass at a referee station. I know that I'm looking to spend at least another 500-1000 on this car, on the way to get the engine running smoothly enough to pass smog. And I've resigned myself to paying the late-fee for registration.
The late fee on this car will be much less expensive than the one on my truck. '05 3500 Silverado, Crew Cab, Dually, 6.6 Turbo Diesel. Out the door from DMV... $868.00... plus three trips to the scale... |
