1992 300E water pump removal
I have a 92 300E 3.0. Is there a trick to removing the water pump! The blots are easy to see but a bear to put a tool on. Any tips would be great!

Not simple. You might need a manual. Do a search for special snap on wobble on long extension. It's an Fx-13 or something like that.
You definitely have to remove the fan. Also be prepared for the belt tensioner to be bad. When you put it back together it won't tighten properly. Happened to me twice. Be sure to buy either a factory rebuilt or, what is the brand, LASO. Others will have more advice on this nasty task. Steve |

water pump on 300E
I recently did mine on a 300CE. It is not easy but certainly doable. May I suggest that you go to the search button and type in waterpump removal...you will get all of the information that you need. I did not have the Snap-on FX-13 which does make the job much easier, however, I was able to get the 3 13mm bolts out with a 6inch quarter inch drive extension and a 13mm flex head socket. Be prepared to remove the fan, tensioner (be sure you have a good look at how it is assembled as you take it apart) and remove the bolts to the Power Strearing Pump and move it out of the way. I also found it easier to see the top right hand bolt by removing the plastic rail along the intake side that wires run under and to pull the oil dip stick. This enable me to locate this hard to see bolt. Take your time, lable bolts if this is your first time doing this so that you get everything back as it belongs. The difficult time I had was getting the 6mm allen bolt out which is the top left one closest to you as you look at the pump. I had to use a great deal of PB Blaster and carefully heat the bolt as it would not come loose...the others were fine. Good luck my friend.

Replace the short large diameter hose that goes from the water pump to the cylinder head while you have everything apart.

You don't have to remove the fan. Although one of the original founders of this site, BenzTech, who was a pro MB Tech said that he could change one in less than an hour using the Snap On FLX-13, I have never managed to get one and try it. I was ready to buy one once and the Snap On man couldn't even get one when he ordered it. The difference in using this and using an extension and wobble joint is that the FLX-13 has a 1/4" shaft. I am told that when torquing on this tool it feels like the tool shaft is going to twist in two.
Instead, I end up pulling the bolts from the tensioner and power steering pump to move them out of the way. It's a challenging job. When there, replace the short hose. Make sure you order one with the pump. |
