1995 E320 Sedan - OOPS! Rear brake rotor disassembly

Got some new wheels and tires yesterday... Jacked up the rear of the car in utter excitement!! Didn't put the emrg. brake on.... and down she came. The car fell and it landed on the dust cover. Now I have a click and rub!!! I have looked all around the spinning masses and the stationary dust sheild and don't see where the rub and click are coming from!!!

I am hoping that someof you can 1 tell me if anything like this has happened to you... and how the hell i go about pulling the hub off to inspect the hub itself to see where a rub might be coming from.

1. the dust shield is a little deformed although its not terrible (must be just neough huh!?!)
2. I have verified that the new wheel is NOT rubbing on the dust cover or anything else.
3. the rub and click are very subtle when spinning the tire while mounted on the hub and the resistance increases jsut slightly where the hub makes the noises.
4. Ican see no visible spots where the brake rotor is coming into contact with anything that is stationary.
5. I have verified that the rotor never touched the ground... ie it shouldn't be a culprit but some how seems to be.

There is some crazy nut on the hub... I don't knw where I would even start looking for the socket that fits it...

I need pics, and directions on how to take this thing apart... anyone got a few minutes to spare with me??

Thanks guys!!!

Justin

ALright so the socket to fit the hub is a normal socket... got that but all I read is that any work on these rear ends is reall y bad stuff. I am hoping that a cover got a little tweaked as the dust cover was the only thing that touched the ground!!!

Any ideas for the weekend would be very much appreicated... Followed by some how-to's on how to get this hub off and what to expect.

Thanks !!!

Forget the hub idea. It's a press fit into the bearing, and pulling it out destroys the bearing.

Justin, check out the source of the rub as follows:
1) Use a floor jack under the differential to raise both rear tires off the ground. Chock the front tires, as required.
2) Remove the rear wheel with the damaged dust shield.
3) Place the transmission in Neutral ... you'll need to turn the key to Position 1 and press the brake pedal to do that.
4) Have a helper turn the opposite wheel and determine the source of the rub.
5) Reshape the dust shield, as required, to eliminate the rub.

I think you will want to remove the caliper to verify that the rub is not from the rotor against the pads. To do that, remove the 2 18mm bolts in the back.

Put your old wheel/tire/lugbolts back. Does the click disappear?

If yes, the lugbolt for the new wheel is just a bit too long. File some off.

You know you may have something there on the lugs.... I am going to check there first being that it is the easiest and quickest... and the most reasonable being that I had to get a different lenght lug bolt all around. otherwise the rub is normal just like one would have on any disc brake on any vehicle... little ru from the brake pad on the disc is completely normal and shows that you are in good shape.

Thanks for the ideas guys!!!

If anyone else has any more then please throw them in!!

Thanks,

Justin

It seems that this is the problem guys!! Thank goodness. I checked into it and the lug botls are just a hair to long... I was able to look through one of the mounting holes when it would pass over the emergency brake linkages. and it was clear as to where they were rubbing.

So now I'm looking at taking them down a little.

Thanks for the idea!! Thats something that would have taken me a while to arrive at.
