W124 parking brake

The parking foot brake on my 95 e300d has stopped working. The pedal goes down, the brakes come on to hold the car but when you take your foot off the pedal comes right up again - it has stopped making the ratchet sound when pushing the pedal down. The hand release seems to be loose like it is not doing anything as well.
Any ideas for me?
Thanks

The pawl in the ratchet mechanism is probably siezed. Free it up with a bit of oil.

The first thing I would do is jack up the rear of the car and crawl under to take a look at the cable where it joins the Y branch, for lack of a better description. The cables can rust and bind up.

Thanks. Had a look this evening and the problem seems to be a broken spring on the rtachet mechanism behind the cable. Any idea how to remove the pedal assy - it is not obvious!

Problem solved for less than a buck. The spring on the ratchet pawl had broken; nothing else wrong. replaced the spring with new one from MB and all fixed.
