1995 E320 HFM “Teach Mode?”
I just replaced the MAF on my 1995 E320 Cabriolet because of a DTC 10. That did solve the DTC issue, but now it runs rough at idle for a short period of time before it stabilizes where as it did not have that characteristic before. Is it possible that the HFM system is going through a teach mode to adjust to the new component? If not, is there a way to manually initiate it?

You can clear the memory of the modules on that cahhassis if you build a LED tool .
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=107630 The code is cleared first and then after a Single flash comes back verifyting clear, you can then clear the memory back to Mean with the same tool. But it should reset itself after a few drive cycles.. |

Thank you for responding to my post.
My E320 is a California model, which has the LED and button built into the 16 pin DTC connector. With that, I wan read the code and reset it. What is the proceedure for clearing the settings to mean? |

All models, not just CA, have the LED and built in button but that button reads on the DM / diagnostic module. The DM is sort of data compiler for emissions issues. There are a half dozen or so other PINs that set and clear fault codes. To read these other PINs you need to build the code reader described in Arthur's link.

Again, I want to thank you for your help. I have found that there is a great lack of accurate information on this subject. One more question and I will quit bugging you:
After making the tool and clearing all of the residual faults, there is one that reoccurs from Pin 8, Code 13 - O2S (Lambda) control system operating at rich or lean limit. Can you give me any insite as to what is causing this and the remedy? Thanks again! |

It is possible that the engine control computer is tying to compensate for a bad MAF. Unless you reset the adaptation, the computer doesn't know it is now working with "good" MAF data. Over the course of several start/run/shutdown cycles, the computer should readapt. You
can also reset the adaptation by first clearing all codes, then turn key off and back on for 90 seconds, then back off again prior to start. |

You can not reset until you initiate a ground signal back to the ECU AFTER you get a Single Flash verifying codes have been cleared.. Then you turn off key for 10 sec, On for 50 while adaptation resets and then start. And that just brings the ECU to Mean and then it will adapt and relearn to the new Maf and all other mapping as you drive. That is why you want the tool to initiate the process. Just turning the key on/off and waiting 50 secs will not initiate the memory process. It has to be triggered with the push button on the tool. [ which is the grounding to start the reset]. This is the procedure: After you have cleared the codes and get a Single Flash [ verifying codes have been erased/cleared], you then must hold down the button for 6 -8 secs and then continue as posted... |
