Help On Fuel Pump Troubleshooting
89 190E 2.6
Trying to troubleshoot no start. I have one main question and one secondary question. As I am facing the engine from the front of the car looking at the fuel distributor; the line coming from the fuel pumps is on the rear side of the fuel distributor; correct? (nearest to firewall). The other line going to regulator is the return. Am I correct so far? So when I jump ports 7/8 at fuel relay the pump(s) come on (or I think both do but I am not sure if its both) there is no fuel coming out of the fuel line going into the back side of the fuel distributor. Does this mean I definitely have a fuel pump or accumulator problem? since fuel is not making it there? Thanks

Dug a little further.
With pins 7/8 jumped and fuel pumps running I disconnected line at lower pump and some but very little fuel was coming out. Then disconnected top pump and no fuel was coming out. So it seems fuel pumps need replacing, unless there is something else before in the tank that can be causing fuel block. However, I inititially had disconnected large fuel line going to top pump and fuel was coming out (gravity) when I emptied tank. This car has been sitting for over 3 years garaged. Turns over and cranks and runs with starting fluid. Previous owner said he thought it was the fuel pumps but was not sure. It appears that it is. Confirmation of the above would be GREATLY! appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would verify that fuel still comes out of the tank!
Usually pumps that make noise when jumped will pump something. Old fuel dries to form glue. It is conceivable that all the rollers (that push the fuel) inside the pump are glued in place and not pushing anything. Smack the pump lightly with it running and see if it helps. I'd also advise doing this after getting NEW fuel.

Yes, Sorry I guess I need to back up.
Cars been sitting 3 years in garage. Drained gas. Put in new permium and injector cleaner and water wetter. Changed plugs. Changed oil filter. New battery. Bumped and crank pulley turned. Squirted starting fluid and she ran till it gave out a few seconds. Fuel not coming to distributor. Fuel not coming out of top pump. Very little out of bottom pump. Did drain initially unti no more came out (drip) Came out strong (gravity) when drained so I dont think the screen is clogged. I did tap fuel pump all over. I'll keep going. These are available on e-bay (too good of a deal?)

OK it was pumps. Switched pumps from other car and this one now runs and stays running. So now I guess I'll find out more reasons why it only cost me $600 to buy this car. It is running rich however. Plugs are getting black, some black smoke which is the way the plugs were when I got the car. Put in new NGK copper core 2238 had champs in it.
So car is running, running rich and furthermore no start when hot-wants to but not quite (probably because plugs are fouled)
