Question about a previous experience with a mechanic..

I have a seperate question. Maybe someone in the biz or has previous knowledge of this.

I replaced the pump I believe in july of this past year. It ran like 1,000 bucks at the place I took it, and I just had the feeling it wasnt done right. First when I got the car back my key didnt work as far as unlocking my doors by pushing the button on the key. So I asked him about that he basically told me the key must of been droped in the past or something and it needed to be synched again. I went and tried to do that but didnt work. I called him back and he basically gave me the run around again.

Well now what 8 months or so later it seems like the pump went out. Do I have any legal recourse or what can I do? Especially if the pump is an old pump or the wrong one? I know I can call and express how I feel but what can I really do? Or am I screwed?

If the pump that was replaced is a Mercedes factory part (with the star logo on it), on it failed within a year, the dealership will replace it, and re-install it, at their cost.

Most people don't realize that all factory parts, purchased from a dealer, with the star logo on it, come with one year warranties.

It doesn't matter if the owner, an independent mechanic, or the dealer installed the part.

They are required to replace and re-install the part, free of charge.

Hmmm interesting. I would hope he would of put that part in but I have no idea if it staright from the dealership?

1) Is there any way I can locate the pump and check?

and

2) what if it is an aftermarket pump what recourse do I have if its an aftermarket or even an old part?

I just have that feeling the guy put the wrong pump in, or an old one. And that lead to the problem of not being able to sync my key. I had that sick feeling when I left their that I was being screwed.

Any advice.

What kind of pump are you talking about?

All the professionals I know that specialize in MB offer the same warrantee as MB does. All the parts suppliers used by professionals do similarly.

I b elieve its the pse pump? The one that controls the suction on the doors and the trunk lid?

I just have that feeling that he put a used part in. I just have that feeling. But before I take it to anotehr shop that I trust I want to know if there's any recourse that I can do with this other shop?

the first thing is to give him a chance to fix it. If he refuses, then you need to explore your options.

There is a pump in the trunk for "closing assist", is that the problem?

ANY reputable repair shop should state their warranty! And print that on their repair order.

Will,
There are two pumps, one in the trunk on top of the rear wheel (drivers side) controls the "draw in" of the doors. The other under the passenger rear seat controls the lock/unlock, lumbars, backup rods, vacuum to run HVAC when the engine is not producing any. The remote sends a signal to that, pressure to unlock and vacuum to lock. A brand new "close assist" pump is somewhere under $1000, the lock unlock etc is somewhat less. The close assist is fairly common failure, the lock pump not as often.
The dealer will support their work for a year if they did it, but will not support labor if they did not install it. Your mechanic needs to take it back with proof of purchase to where he got it, for a replacement.
I guess you could contact your local regulation agency, states attorney, etc.
Sometimes the dealer, altho more expensive is worth it in the long run...

OK sorry but are you guys saying that no matter where he got the pump from I have 1 year to get the pump (the part) replaced? And maybe have to pay for labor? IF I could get the pump replaced for another one, and have to just pay for labor I would be happy. Cuz I think the pump cost me like 800 bucks.

What I wrote is that if the part is a factory part (with the star logo), the dealer is responsible for replacing the part, including the labor. You pay nothing.

All dealer parts come with a one year warranty.

How hard would it be to check the pump, because I need to determine if it was a factory part or an aftermarket part.

Do they even make aftermarket pumps ? Or are they all factory pumps?

Thanks for taking the time for this question.

By the way the fuse that controls the pump I believe, in the trunk keeps blowing everytime I put a new fuse in it. I put about 4 brand new fuses in and as soon as I start the car the fuse blows.

I'm sure it has something to do with this issue, but what could it be?

I don't think anyone is making remanufactured PSE pumps.

Getting at the pump is easy.

At the bottom outside corners of the rear seat lower cushion, you should see red levers - down where the seat cushion ends and the carpet starts.

Those release the front latches on the bottom cushion. Pull (or push) the lever and lift gently at the corner. Then do the other side.

Once released, slide the lower cushion forward and remove it from the car.

This is a one-man job - the cushion is surprisingly light.

The PSE pump is in a well beneath the sound batting on the passenger side of the car.

If you're blowing fuses to the pump every time you insert one - the pump is likely shorted out.

As others have stated, most reputable mechanics provide a 12/12 warranty on their repairs - parts included (providing they buy the parts).

As for MB honoring the warranty on the part if it was purchased there - they likely will, providing you can provide proof of purchase.

Note that your invoice from the mechanic is not sufficient. You must have the invoice for the purchase of the part itself.

As for MB honoring the labor part of the deal - I highly doubt that. I'd love to see some proof of that. Knowing that MB has recently had a habit of dodging legitimate responsibility for items they caused (140 wiring harnesses, 210 spring perches, etc.), I find it hard to believe that they would pay to replace a part someone else installed.

The effort to install this part is literally 15 minutes MAX. Cushion out - 30/60 seconds. Uncover pump - 5 seconds. Detach vacuum lines - 2 minutes. Disconnect harness - 10 seconds. Pull pump and replace with new (it's not bolted in) - 60 seconds. Reattach all harnesses and vacuum lines - 60 seconds. Replace rear seat - 5 minutes (after reinstalling it and realizing you left the seatbelt latches below the seat).

Sit down and admire your handiwork - 4+ minutes. Done.

You're most likely the victim of a mechanic that purchased a used part and charged you like-new pricing. My 92 has the original part, and it's working fine. (knock on wood).

You can make this repair yourself... just be careful how you pry the vacuum lines loose - you don't want to break anything.

If you haven't already done it - and I know I've suggested it to you before - get an AllDataDIY account for the car. Register through the link on v12uberalles dot com to give the author of that excellent site a few cents referral fee. After all, you own a V12, too...

Thanks for the good info brian. Im going to check that pump by going under the coushin.

This mechanic was kind of sketchy but that was when it was time to pay and once I had the car their. I just really really believe he put an old pump in there. I just feel it. I'm going to find my reciept and then call him leave him a message tonight and see if he will honor it or not.

I'm assuming from your post brian that if this mechanic doesn't honor getting a new pump, that mercedes wont give me a new pump
( assuming its a mercedes pump)

I just will be so mad if 1) he put in a old pump and charged me for a new one. or 2) I have to end up paying for another pump and labor.

Well I checked the pump, it was pretty easy to check it. But I didn't wnat to mess with it cuz of all the stuff ontop of it or around it. I saw one of the vaccum ports i guess you would call it was broken off. Dont think that would cause the shorting problem. But I didn't want to mess with it.

Oh and I found my reciept it says I had this pump changed on 5/17/07 so about 10 months ago. Hopefully theres a warranty.

hmm for some reason it says pics are to big.

So what i did was loaded them onto my pics on my space.

just click here for the link.

Can anyone tell me if this is straight from mercedes? Or any info you can tell me about this pump from the pics?
