Unhappy M104 Piston Replacement

I have a 95 C280 with a hole in #6 piston. Has anyone tried to replace a piston with the engine in the car? I'm cusrious to know if you can pull the oil pan with the engine in the car.
Thanks in advance,

-Jim

It will be faster to remove the engine to do the job..

The oil pan must be removed
Cylinder head must be removed

There is no way to remove a piston in the car without the oil pan and head removed...

As the piston cannot be removed at the bottom unless the crankshaft is removed...One would not want to try that in the car

to remove the crankshaft would be a PITA to try and remove in the car
Trans removed..front cover..chain tensioner and cam gears..

Thumbs up

Pull the motor. If it's worth keeping tear it down totally and rebuild while apart.

Thanks for the replys. I am curious, why would the crank have to come out to replace a piston? I already have the head off, I would just need to unbolt the rod cap on #6 piston and push it out the top. Install is in the reverse. My origional question is can the oil pan be pulled with the engine in the car.

Again thanks for the reply any info I can gather is helpful.

-Jim

From what I can tell just by reading the shop manual, it is theoretically possible. They have you remove the engine and the oil pump (which means you have removed the oil pan and windage tray), and then push the piston out the top.
Removing the oil pan, pump and tray is possible with the engine in the car, but it looks like a pita.

It is technically possible. It would not be worth the time though. I might consider this on a lift but not on the garage floor. I would still probably remove the engine. Getting the pan out requires unbolting the oil pump with the pan just down a little. It is horrible.
