Need to change Ignition Housing..

I have done Nissans but not Mercedes... Customer wants me to change out the ignition housing which mounts on column. It is 1991 190E Mercedes .. any special tool required to remove from column? How much of the dash has to be removed?

Any hints appreciated.. thanks Merlin

Ignition removal

Good response. But if you need to remove the entire lock cylinder, I might add, you do not need to remove the steering wheel.
You do need to take out the instrument cluster. Remove the two 10mm(I believe) nuts securing the steering column to the dash frame.
Turn key in ignition lock to position 1. In this position, you can unplug the electrical from the lock cylinder.
Loosen lock cylinder collar and slide out of the way.
As best you can,may require removing support bolts lower down the steering column, push down steering column to clear the ignition switch from the dash. Push in detant button usually hidden by lock collar, and the lock cylinder will then slide out of the column.

We have all been there on mid 90's & earlier because the Huf locks have planned obsolescence. You will need to get the replacement tumbler ordered from the dealer so that the profits flow directly back to Huf.
If the key won't turn anymore, I have seen a tool on the web that lines up where to drill a hole so you can reach the detents with the wire.

What is the best method to use in replacing the electrical connector on the back of the ignition housing? I need to change mine out and did not know how it disconnected from the lock housing.

Thanks,

Ron

Need the key

Assuming you have the instrument cluster out already. Insert ignition key and turn to position 1. The electrical pig tail can be unplugged from the back of the lock cylinder housing.
Loosen the collar securing the lock cylinder to the steering column. Slide out of the way. Key still in position 1. Look to the under side of the lock cylinder (in the area once covered by the collar)for a detant. Press the detant in and at the same time slide the lock cylinder out of the steering column. ((You may have to remove two nuts securing the steering column. These are just inside the lip of the instrument cluster opening.
This may give you a little more flexibility removing the lock cylinder.))
Two phillips screws secure the switch to the cylinder housing. Remove old switch. Install new and reassemble.
