1989 300E (W124) Occasional Stalling / Difficult Re-Start
Hello everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve posted any questions. However I do check regularly for an opportunity to offer my $0.02 to forum issues.
I have been experiencing rough driving within the last month. The car acts as if it wants to stall while driving between 35-50 MPH (usually on an upgrade). I’ve noticed it difficult to re-start while engine is warm, for instance going into a store for a few minutes then coming back finding that the car will not re-start for 3-5 minutes. This happens also at the gas pump, only occasionally. Just recently the car now stalls on in the act of driving. Again, let the car sit for approximately 5 minutes and it will re-start. I took my car to my mechanic (not an Indy, but someone who knows the car) for a test drive for analysis and he first thinks its clogged fuel filters. Immediately I had my reservations about that because I had them replaced not even 3 years ago. In the meantime, my water pump decides to go. I take it to my mechanic and he did face the similar problems that the other forum members complain about on here. While his test driving, the car didn’t stall on him once. When I’m at his garage to pick up my car, the engine is running while we’re chatting, then all of a sudden the car shuts off. I tell him this is what I’ve been experiencing. I leave my car with him another day for him to isolate the problem, now he says it’s the “ignition something-or-other”. He shows me a cable running from the front of the engine (near the fan)(1st & 2nd image), to a relay looking box just in front of the fuse box (3rd image). He lets me feel the cable for the "ticking" feeling inside of it (4th image). He says that should not feel like that and that possibly that is where my problem is lying. I told him that I would check with this forum for suggestions. As I’m looking through the board for similar issues, I run across many with similar symptoms. I hear that the 2 main culprits are the Fuel Pump Relay and Crank Shaft Position Sensor. Any feedback or ideas as to why I’m still experiencing this will be greatly appreciated. I have done the following: • Replaced OVP with new unit (4 mos. ago) • Replaced alternator (14 mos. ago) • Tune-up (18 mos. ago) Thanks to everyone in advance for all of your help. |

This could be funny.... See the wire tie? Is that where you feel the ticking in the cable? If , YES , then , see the shock under that spot.? Take a large screwdriver and wedge the top mount of that shock mount...ticking STOP????????????????????????

I just tried starting the car and I couldn't get it to turn over. I'll try it when the day cools off a bit. Maybe I might find some success.

Okay, the car started. Of course it did it once it cooled off outside.
The cable is not "pulsating" now. Are the Fuel Pump Relay and the Crankshaft Position Sensor sensitive to heat? |

Yes,
But , on your previous post, you said the car won't even turn over ???

Yes, the car didn't turn over this afternoon when it was much warmer outside.
When it cooled off, I tried again successfully. |

You realise "Turn-Over " means the car will not crank when the starter is engaged ???
Turn over is the same a crank. Or do you mean won't RUN/START , but will crank?

Very good.
You tell a mechanic your car will not turn over and he is getting out the jumper cables b/c the suspect is a dead battery...but if you tell him it turns over but won't start/run, he is asking if you ran out of gas...... Terminology that helps in postings...thats all. And I also think the first suspect is fuel delivery, so a FP test will tell what's up on that. Fuel flow from the fiter would be my first suspect too.

How's the cap and rotor?
I had a similar issue (car would start when cold but not when hot). It turned out that the cap and rotor were SHOT. It's worth checking out.

My 1989 300E had a bad fuel line hose from the fuel filter to the fuel line. It was leaking pretty bad! I replaced the fuel filter while I was down there along with the hose! Now my car seems to idle smoother and it starts up right away even while hot! I would start with the filter! It could be a cheap fix!
