Special Tools?
Having owned a 240D for the past five years I never needed any special tools. Now with an 1988 300CE and wanting to do the plugs, I've read about a couple of special tools needed to do the job!?!?! Do I really need them? If so, where can they be purchased? Thanks!

John:
Nothing all that special needed, nothing you either don't have or couldn't buy at Sears or an auto parts store. You'll need to get the wires off the sparkplugs, do a plug wire pulling pliers, the spark plug socket, extension and ratchet, that's all common stuff, and to do it right you should be gapping the plugs to .032", so a plug gapper tool, and you should be torqueing the plugs on a 103 motor at 20nm, you may want to get a torque wrench to do this if you don't have one. it's a good tool to have anyways. Be sure to use the approved Bosch Super spark plug, these are non-resistor type plugs Gilly

Gilly is right, this is about as straight forward as any plug change can be. In fact to remove the boots, if the engine is cold, you can just twist them a little with your fingers and they'll pull right off.
Don't use platinum plugs in this engine. The platinums have a tiny center electrode and won't make a fat enough spark to give a smooth idle. I have had the best luck with standard Bosch plugs gapped at .034". Good luck, |
